I think MSU is a solid team, and they have a puncher's chance. They have a couple days extra prep time/rest, Alabama has been notoriously sluggish the week after LSU, and it's in Starkville. Plus Dak Prescott is the best and most experienced QB in the SEC so he should be steady.

However, looking at MSU's schedule and results this year, I see a fairly mediocre track record.

Losses to LSU at home and A&M on the road, both team that Alabama handled fairly well (I know these kind of comparisons don't tell the whole story and it's more about match ups, but I think they can still give some perspective).

The wins are Southern Miss, NW State, Auburn, Troy, La Tech, Kentucky, and Missouri.

None of those are above average teams.

I think it will be a low scoring Bama win. I think MSU's defense can make it difficult for Alabama and I think Alabama's defense will have a plan to contain Dak and Alabama will probably control the line of scrimmage again.

I would be more concerned if your defense was any better. Because unlike LF Dak will get his yards. He will see pressure like he's not felt before but he can scramble better than most. However, your defense is average at best. We just got 434 yards on the 3rd best defense in the SEC (8th overall). Ms State's defense is like 50th in the country (6th in the SEC). The only way this is not a blowout is first Bama has to be in hangover mode with several turnovers and Dak has the game of his life.

Yards aren't a good measure of our defense.

4th in sec in scoring defense

1st in sec in td's allowed (2nd in country)

1st in sec in td% in redzone

6th in sec in 3rd down conversion %

4th in sec in sacks

4th in sec in TFL

I honestly don't know how we will perform Saturday, but I think Dak will have learned from the 3 red zone INT's he threw in last year's game. I'm still scratching my head on the aTm game, but the 2 LSU match-ups don't compare. Anyone that watched our game could see we were thrown off in the first half, but made great adjustments in the second half that gave us a shot to win. Missouri is a ranked 11th in total defense in the nation and we hung 31 on on them in a monsoon, so I think we can move the ball. One area that we've excelled this year is not committing penalties (5th) and I'm interested to see if that trend continues this weekend...

Coming from an OM Fan -

This game is going to be close for a while. Mississippi State will be pumped for a chance to play a big game against a highly ranked team, and will come out swinging. Dak and the MSU offense will sling the ball around and will try and get Dak into space so that he can make plays, and they will be successful. Dak will throw a touchdown (maybe two), and probably rush for another. However, beyond that, it will be all field goals. I don't care how "good" MSU's offense has been this season, they have yet to play a front seven that can generate pressure on any down, regardless of if they blitz 3 lineman or bring the house. Prescott will be sacked, probably twice. After a while, the Alabama defensive line will begin to employ a fence technique and keep Prescott inside the pocket, forcing him straight upfield where Reggie Ragland will be waiting to take his head off. Alabama's offense, led by Derrick Henry, will have trouble scoring early because of the hype inside Davis Wade Stadium, but, barring injury, Derrick Henry will continue to ground and pound all game and wear out the thin MSU defensive front. MSU's secondary has had injuries, and Jake Coker will throw a touchdown or two. The difference will be Alabama's ability to out-muscle teams at the end of games. Derrick Henry will explode in the third quarter, and Dak Prescott will be tired of getting hit in the second half. MSU gives Nick Saban and the mighty Crimson Tide their best shot, but in the end, MSU just isn't talented, strong, or deep enough to keep up with the stacked Alabama roster.

Prediction-

Alabama 34
Mississippi State 23

Bama is obviously likely to win, but we can put ourselves in a position to win if we do a few basic things:

1) we don't get on the wrong side of the field position game early on. It killed us in the first half last year. Being at home should help, so we need to put that pressure on Bama. Part of that is recognizing we are playing against a great defense, and taking what's there when it's there.

2) Our receivers have to make the catches. We had a big drop against you guys last year when we had the momentum in the 4th quarter. Goes back to taking what is available. Secure the ball first. Run after you secure the ball.

3) The defense has to get off the field on 3rd down. That means don't let Coker scramble for a first down. On your last td drive last year, Sims killed us with two scrambles on 3rd and long. We can't let that happen if we are going to have a chance to win.

4) Force Kiffin to think. He's a good OC, but I think he outsmarts himself sometimes. We need to put him in the position to do that.

Bama has faced 2 true passing teams this year. Just so happens that they (om and aTm) scored the most points on bama all year. Om beat them and had Kyle Allen not thrown 3 pick 6s, aTm could've won that game. On the year, bama facing run first teams has given up 14.2 points/game. Against pass first teams, bama has given up 33 points/game... 30 if you throw out the om fluke pass.

(Didn't factor in any OOC games except Wisconsin)

Last year we could pass, but our offense was based on the run... Not this year. We are a passing team with a mobile qb that can run hurry up, which is what gives you trouble. We'll have 4 to 5 wr's on the field which will force you to take lb's out and replace them with safeties and cb's. We aren't even gonna attempt to run much other than Dak designed runs, option, and Dak scrambling on pass plays. We're gonna bubble screen to force your big dlinemen to run sideline-to-sideline and hopefully tire them.

On defense, we'll bend, but hopefully not break. We've been very successful this year doing this... We're #2 nationally in td's allowed.

I don't know if we win or not, but this is the best we've matched up with you bc of our commitment to pass

What game plan did you guys use against Aggie?

State's has way to many injuries on the offensive line to pull off this upset. I am a MSU fan but I expect DAK will be pretty frustrated with the pressure/sacks he will receive on Saturday. I am a State fan but expect we will lose by 14 or more.

I kind of hope that is how it goes, but Tennessee's o-line held up pretty well. You can make the argument that Bama was tired against Tennessee, and the contrast between that game and LSU is evident, but MSU will be up for this game. I'm not too worried about the passing because there won't be a lot of one-on-one coverage that could get us beat deep. Dak will move the ball, but I'm hoping they stall out and have to settle for field goals. Also, the more he throws the higher possibilities for picks. The secondary hasn't had a pick since Arky, they are hungry for some.

How much do stats and strength of schedule matter with 3 losses, one being from Memphis?

Yeah MSU defense tough to read this year and Kiffin will probably throw all over them. As much as this pains me, Bammer is only looking more in-sync and stronger as the season goes on. Very few mistakes.
