If everyone followed our lead ...

if everyone follows South Carolina's lead there would be no championships for anyone.

... except for baseball, track, equestrian, etc.
It's only a matter of time before we get the other ones. It's only a matter of time ... it'll be sooner rather than later.

You know the Cocks play the Cats this weekend.
Pretty sure they will not be undefeated come monday.

The schools think that throwing huge money at mediocre coaches will automatically make them next-level. Sumlin, Bielema, B. Jones, Malzhan these guys are all paid like top 15 coaches in the country
Sumlin is the 6th highest paid coach in college football.
The contracts for Bielema, Jones, and Malzahn combined don't reach the level of stupidity that Sumlin's contract is at.

Sumlin - 7th highest paid ($5m); 44-21 (21-19); 67.7% (52.5%) average 4th place finish in division
Malzhan - 8th highest paid ($4.725m); 35-18 (18-14); 66.0% (56.3%); average 3-4th place finish in division
Freeze - 9th highest paid ($4.7m); 39-25 (19-21); 60.9% (47.5%); average 4-5th place finish in division
Mullen - 16th highest paid ($4.2m); 61-42 (29-35); 59.2% (45.3%); average 4th place finish in division
Bert - 17th highest paid ($4.1m); 25-26 (10-22); 49.0% (31.25%); average 5-6th place finish in division
Butch - 18th highest paid ($4.1m); 30-21 (14-18); 58.8% (43.75%); average 3-4th place finish in division
Obviously different guys are in (and took over) different situations. But they are all performing about the same. Auburn and A&M have been a little better, but they generally have had better programs the last decade or so.
For reference, some of the other coaches around that pay level are Dabo, James Franklin, Dantonio, David Shaw, Gary Patterson, Bobby Petrino.
My point remains, schools are paying these coaches because "that's what the position pays" rather than what that coach necessarily is "worth". And when the school pays that much, fans expect a coach to deliver at a level equal to people at his pay scale, which is somewhat unrealistic.

Out of curiosity....and I've seen this phrase before...what is the time frame for sooner and what is the time frame for later?

Reduce div games to 5, increase crossdiv games to 3.
Div tiebreaker is record of crossdiv opponents. 2nd tier tiebreaker is ap25.

That list you're quoting has Charlie Strong, who was fired in November, as the 6th highest. Sumlin is also the only coach in that list you just quoted who has failed to win a single conference title at multiple schools as a head coach.
His new contract at South Florida is nowhere close, and for good reason (USF is basically paying nothing for Strong...making t.u. give him nearly every cent of his buyout before the salary increases)

That's largely besides the point. But ok, he's 6th (and makes Malzhan 7th and Freeze 8th, Les was also fired making Mullen 14th, Bert 15th, and Butch 16th).

On equal playing fields, they all preform about the same. I'm not a fan of Sumlin, but I can't say he is definitively worse than any of those other coaches
