re: Starting #1 in the polls because of winning the title the year before.

The teams in preseason polls are voted based on last season along with returnees etc.
So either way last year is always taken into consideration.
Of course, but that at least is logical. Players returning, key losses, coaching turnover, etc should all come into play. But I mean, if a team wins the national title then loses 10 starters on O, 10 on D, both kickers, and half their coaching staff...then no, they shouldn't start #1 simply due to where they finsihed a year ago.

Show the old guy this site. They have the same legitimacy as any preseason poll. The champ stays on top until they get beat and so on...and WVU is the defending champ FWIW.

I've always thought that official rankings should begin after 3-4 games have been played.

Isn't the pre-season poll based on where the voters expect the teams to finish the season, so all of the information, players returning, ect. is figured in to the vote?

All the posters in this thread that are saying,"pre season polls are irrelevant", arent remembering 2004 well. If two teams start at 1&2 , and they go undefeated ad so does the #3 team, that #3 team will get left out. I'm glad next year, we have a playoff somewhat.

Who really gives a shite? This is nothing more than LSU fans inferiority complex showing its ugly face again. If you believe that preseason polls are meaningless, which I personally do, then who cares.

This is true. I'm glad to see the playoff coming as well.

Polls shouldn't be released any earlier then the end of September in a perfect world.
Unfortunately because at least one poll ties into the BCS equation the rankings do matter.

i can absolutely see the problem in this year and next, before the playoff is in place.
Team A wins the NC
Team A starts the next season at 5-6
Team A goes undefeated and is left out because 2 teams of 1-4 are undefeated as well
Team A has no chance to defend
It hasn't happened yet that I can recall, but absolutely plausible. IMO it would have happened in 2003 if Clarett hadn't gone nuts

Should not be the determining factor. Sure if you don't graduate anyone.
Each team is different from the previous year.
I think it's obvious Bama will be much improved over last year. SEC ffuuuuucccckkkked
