No, it really doesnt. Either way, the search starts now and a hire wouldnt be made until December.

Not necessarily. We already had the Spurrier hire sealed when Holtz left. And we may not announce the hire until December, but it may have been made long before then.

And the same could have occurred with an end of year retirement announcement. The Holtz situation proves that to be true.

He put the school and team ahead of himself and you call him a quitter? He was candidly honest about why it was time and even said this was not how he wanted to end his career at SC. He did what was right which most people can even get to in this type of situation. Congrats Coach Spurrier on a great run at SC!

It amazes me how many are praising him quitting on his players in the middle of the season just because the season has gone downhill. If half of the players did the same, I doubt they would be praised for such a "commendable" act.

I can't believe he didn't even turn in his two week notice. What a POS.

Is a "lie" a lie when it was the truth when it was uttered?

I agree totally.

He was always bitching if things weren't going his way. Whether it was a beat reporter in Columbia where he acted like a little girl in trying to have the guy banned, leaving when Dan Snyder wouldn't give him complete control of the Skins, getting mad at Foley when Foley wouldn't openly go to the press about FSU's late hits on Wuerffel or this past summer when he railed on the media for saying exactly what ended up happening, if he didn't get his way he would pout and run off. He was a good coach but he was also a little bitch at times. I was never crazy about the guy. Say what you want but his ego and his mouth could never believe somebody else couold co-exist in the Spurrier universe. I'm glad he's gone.

Him stepping down now still allows someone else to call the shots the rest of the year. Maybe they can do better. He just knows that what he's been doing isn't working and he doesn't have the answers. You can say it's him quitting on his players, but it's really just doing what's best for his players.

One of my teams just started their season with about 5 straight losses. The coach realized he didn't know how to fix it so he stepped down. Since the interim coach took over, they have won about 4 straight.

Kirby Smart is probably first on the list.

If Fuente pulls off a win against Ole Miss this weekend, he'll be way up there on the list, too.

ETA: Dantonio will get a courtesy call since he's a Carolina alum/former Gamecock football player...but none of us really expect him to come here...and we want a young coach this time around.

I'll say this - he talked enough shite about coaches, players, and programs over the years that if some football fans call him a quitter or a pussy now, it's justified.
