Saban

Is this even a serious question? Spurrier was the coach in the best football producing state in the united states and only won a title once. This also is in a time when Lsu, alabama, georgia, etc were no good. He's also in one of the best talent producing states in the country now. They're not even comparable. Who ever started this question needs his head examined. Saban has changed college football, spurrier is most famous for his whining and throwing his visor.

... Florida is and was one of the greatest pools of talent, but when Spurrier arrived it was being plundered by Miami, FSU, and the other SEC vultures with UF getting the third level talent. The Florida you know today was not the Florida he inherited. It is the one he created. They are a hot spot for recruits because of Spurrier's legacy. Can the same be said of Saban?

South Carolina produces great players, but not nearly in the quantity of Florida. We'll produce maybe ten great players a year to Florida's fifty plus. But the difference is what those players do with Spurrier at the helm. It's the same formula as when he took over at UF. The cream of the crop was being snatched up by other teams before he arrived. He put SC on lock down grabbing the best and the brightest to play at home (for the most part) instead of heading off to UGA, UT, UF, UA, etc.

Spurrier did the same thing at Duke that he is doing at Carolina. Taking a perennial also ran into a legitimate contender. At Duke... Saban will not be going from Alabama to build a program (NFL or otherwise). Watch, he will go back to the NFL to take over NE or some other talent rich program. He is not a builder, but a molder of talent. Without that talent already in place he was mediocre at MSU and Miami.

I would take that whining and visor throwing coach over Saban heads up twenty years ago, ten years ago, right now and in five years.

Saban will go down as the greatest SEC HC once he is finished at Bama. Easy choice

Imagine what Spurrier could do with Alabama's recruiting advantage and talent. Same with LSU.

I'll go with Spurrier.

What does that have to do with anything? No one here cares about academics. I'm sure people have heard the same stories about Saban too.

^^^^ Dumb^^^^

I have facts you and your opinion. Only idiots don't care about academics. Ask the parents of the kids that come to a school. Saban has many times talked about how important the Academic Center is to recruiting.

You are dealing in hypotheticals and also assuming that Spurrier is on par with Saban when it comes to recruiting. There is no better recruiter in all of America than Nick Saban.

Isn't this whole thread a hypothetical? And Bama recruits themselves. Add a good coach like Saban and you have a dream team combo. It's not hard to figure out.

Spurrier's most impressive accomplishment you are right was Duke. What he did at duke was impressive, but then again david cutcliff is doing it right now at Duke as well. Your point about spurrier coming along when florida state and miami were powers. Well you know what there is so much talent in the state of florida that all he needed to do was get a couple of the top kids every year and he was going to be good. If Spurrier never showed up at Florida someone else would have and they would have turned Florida into a top program because there is to much talent in that state to not at least have a run of winning games.

What Saban did at LSU not just Alabama speaks volumes. LSU was no power before they got there just incase you dont remember that. He in a few years took a program that was average and won a championship. Wheres Steve's ring at south Carolina?!?! He is never going to win one there ever. Saban is a better evaluator, recruiter, game day coach, calls a better game, etc. If you want to say saban has better talent that is fine. Talent at worth shite unless you develop it and get the most out of it. Saban is a perfectionist, Spurrier is a little complainer. He whines about the refs, the school hes at, that saban doesn't even need to win the SEC to win the national title. SABAN IS WINNIG AT A TIME WHERE THE SEC HAS BEEN AT ITS BEST. What he has done at alabama in my mind will never be matched again. He took a shitty team and in 2 years made them a power. There won't be someone like him to come around for a while. Comparing these two is comical

When the talent level is equal, Spurrier will beat a Saban football team every time.

But I like Saban better.

Maybe in terms of the SEC, but not in terms of NCs.

Spurrier's best accomplishment was winning 5 SEC titles in 6 years (would've been 6 in 7 if Florida wasn't ineligible in 1990).

However, he only won the one NC, and one of his best teams ever got embarrassed by Nebraska in 1995. The next year, Florida got a mulligan against FSU - ala Alabama in 2011.

Not true. Charley Pell was the one who got the elite talent heading to Gainesville a few years before SOS arrived.

Saban was hardly mediocre at Michigan State. They were a train wreck when he arrived and were 10-2 his last year. Miami has been horrible since Marino retired because they haven't had a QB.

I'm not bashing Spurrier and it's probably fair to say I prefer Saban because I am a Bama fan and I enjoy watching a good defense punish the opposition as opposed to a flashy offense light it up. Both are great in their own way and in their own right. This is a subjective question, there is no way to "prove" who is the best.
