Harry Kalas I think. He was the Phillies longtime announcer. He was great.

LSU's John Ferguson in the 70's and 80's I can remember sitting with my dad listening to the games on his AM alarm clock radio next to his bed....my how times have changed.......

I grew up listening to the Voice of the Razorbacks Paul Eells.
IMO One of the best game announcers ever.
I grew up listening to Paul Eells, too, but as the voice of the Vanderbilt Commodores. Man,he was great.
This isn't one of those "in my day"as if it were better type posts, but its a shame so many of you espeically under 35,or maybe 30 turn to radio as a 3rd or 4th option now for your team's games.
It used to be a big deal to have your team on TV when I was growing up.Until the 80's, a team could only be on tv twice in a given year. For basketball you had the TVS SEC game of the week with John Ferguson doing play by play and Joe Dean doing color.Every team was on once and if you got lucky you're team would be on twice.
For the most part, most fans were real positive about their announcing crews, too.Very loyal to them. Kentucky games with Cawood Ledford could be heard on WHAS out of Louisville or WCKY out of Covington,on the KY side of Cincinnati on clear channel (note the lower case, not the large corp co Clear Channel), Vandy was on WSM 650, Tennessee could be heard on not clear channel, but two strong stations strangely next to one another on the dial, WSIX 980 in Nashville and WNOX 990 out of Knoxville. Georgia was,and still is on a clear channel station WSB 750 out of Atlanta and of course LSU and WWL870 am from New Orleans.
Alabama and Auburn weren't on clear stations, but John Forney did their games for a long time and I grew up hearing Gary Sanders do Auburn games (he's the voice on the 'Punt Bama Punt' clips if you've ever heard them).
Every now and then you'd get to hear the other teams, broadcast crews on what was called "Pick of Dixie" which was a syndicated deal in various southern towns that would carry a game on a Saturday night, typically which would be an LSU home game since a game for radio certainly wouldn't be moved up or down. But when LSU was off or on the road in the day Florida or a Miss State or Ole Miss night game in Jackson might fill the bill or just to incorporate "Dixie" a Tulane or Miami game might be used.
Good memories.

The Voice Of The Tigers, John Ferguson. He retired after the 1983 season, and Jim Hawthorne took over from there.
Hawthorne is the main voice I've always associated with the Tigers and it's awful nice when you're driving through distant states on a Saturday night and can hear Hawthorne's voice on the Big 870 am.
I wonder if any other SEC school's game broadcast can be heard as far away as WWL's can?

John Forney, Doug Layton, Eli Gold, Jim Fyffe, Skip Carey
I loved listening to the Braves pre-game show and wait for Skip to blow up at a rube caller asking to explain the infield fly rule.
On a personal note- I loved going to Legion Field and hearing the PA announcer, Simpson Pepper. He was so dry, gave my cousin and I lots of inside jokes between us. Go to youtube.com and search his name there is a great piece on him from a few years ago.

a list of best PA announcers would have to start with 2 through X. Simpson Pepper was the Moses of PA announcers.
