It's almost like LSU would've been better off losing to Georgia.

LSU beat 2 BCS conference champions OOC that season. They were a lock for the BCS going into the SECCG.

You can actually have 3 if there are two non champions selected as 1 and 2 (with the third being the SEC champions and getting its autobid). It's kindve hard to fathom but Georgia beating LSU in 2011 would've been the closest it ever would've come to happening.

Correct. And it would have happened. Bama would have moved to #1. LSU would have dropped to #2. And UGA would have gone to the Sugar Bowl.

"No more than two teams from a conference may be selected, regardless of whether they are automatic qualifiers or at-large selections, unless two non-champions from the same conference are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the final BCS Standings."

LINK

There would have been little to no way to keep Bama from moving to #1, and LSU would have to be #2. No way in hell they are going to have the loser of Bama-LSU in their NCG and not have the winner of Bama-LSU in it.

I've wondered this since that day. I really think the loss would have kept Bama out. In a normal year, LSU may have been left out because of it, but wins over Bama, Oregon, West Virginia, a top 3 ranked Arkansas. That SOS was insane.

No, it would have been too late in the season. Stanford gets in. The poll era wasn't about a committee decision. It was about WHEN you lost in those days. That's what killed okie state. Bama was one spot behind them in the polls and okie st lost the week after Bama did in 11. LSU, Bama and okie state were 1,2,3. Bama plays okie state.

The BCS was about the two BEST teams in their NCG. They had to slot conference champions in the other BCS Bowls but when it came to their NCG, they didn't give a sh!t whether they were conference champions or not. Incredible that they had the provision to send the conference champion to a BCS Bowl in case the two BEST teams were NON-CHAMPIONS from the same conference. Which is what they would have had with the OP scenario. And rest assured, in 2011 they would have used that provision to put the two BEST teams, Bama and LSU, in their game.

I think we still would've been in. 12-1, SECW Champs and in the SECC game after being ranked #1 most of the year is much more convincing than 11-1, SECW Runner-Up, and losing to the SECW Champ at home.

Ironically enough I think if LSU loses that game it's LSU vs. Oklahoma State.

Agree. If you get down to it, the Honey Badger's return TD pulled Bama's fat out of the fire. Without that, UGa probably holds on and Bama's hopes die. Interesting topic.

Whoever downvoted this still believes that Williams was down with possession on the 1 yard line instead of INT for Reid
