Would
A) LSU still have gone to the national championship?
B) Alabama still have gone to the national championship?

Factors to be considered:
-LSU and Alabama would both have 1 loss, with Bama's loss coming to LSU, thus hurting their BCS ratings with LSU's loss.
-BCS ratings do factor in late season losses as more of a negative which does hurt LSU more in this situation.

Bottom line, would the national championship have been played with 2 teams who didn't win their conference?

Ironically enough I think if LSU loses that game it's LSU vs. Oklahoma State.

No way does Alabama get in and LSU doesn't.

And it would be super weird to put TWO non-champions together in the game.

exactly what I was thinking. You just can't insert Alabama in front of LSU when they had to play an extra game against a top 15 team and the fact that LSU beat Alabama.

Oklahoma State vs. Stanford would have been a real possibility.

Well, maybe not. Oregon was the Pac-12 champ, not Stanford.

Hard to determine at that point. 4 teams with one loss.

Id have to say Bama and OSU

Kind of an odd hypothetical, but I think it ends up LSU/Ok St as well. Here were the standings going into the final week:
LINK

If LSU loses the game, Alabama's loss to LSU is then "downgraded" as their loss is still to a top team, but not an undefeated team. Ok State wins that week and is the "trending up" team to take the second spot. I think the conversation of "can't even win their own division" conversation comes back up as well...

Who knows Bama might jump LSU just for being Bama.

LSU gets left out in favor of 1-loss Stanford, who plays 1-loss OSU. The 2nd loss would drop LSU too far in the Harris poll and Coaches' poll, regardless of the computer polls at that point.

LSU would only have 1 loss so it would come down to four 1-loss teams.

Oklahoma State (Only conference champ of the four)
LSU
Alabama
Stanford

One of the two (LSU or Alabama) wouldn've been left out, at the very least.

Only two teams from one conference were allowed to play in a BCS bowl game, so there wouldn't have been a rematch.

ETA: nvm, I guess the national championship is an exception.

You can actually have 3 if there are two non champions selected as 1 and 2 (with the third being the SEC champions and getting its autobid). It's kindve hard to fathom but Georgia beating LSU in 2011 would've been the closest it ever would've come to happening.

This was discussed prior to the SEC Championship. Remember this was still the BCS. LSU was a lock for the BCS Championship game, win or lose. There would have only been 4 1-loss teams: OSU, LSU, Bama, and Stanford.

Bama and Stanford did not even win their own divisions.

LSU's lone loss on the season would have been to the SEC champion. LSU had beaten Alabama head-to-head so they would have been ranked higher in the human polls and had the higher computer rankings.

Stanford did not even play in the conference championship game. They lost by 3 TDs to an Oregon team that LSU beat by that much.

OSU still had a worse loss than LSU. but if they made it in, LSU would have been the second team.

That season LSU beat the #1, #4, #5, #17, and #19 teams in the nation based on the final standings. They beat the national champion, Pac-12 champion, and the Big East champion.

That would've opened up a can of worms bigger than the rematch did. Wow.

exactly. More of a reason why they finally decided to make it a 4 game playoff.

I doubt LSU and Bama would've played then. Every CFB season is different and when you change the scenario, you change the outcome.

We'll, we're lucky that two best teams, Bama and LSU, played in the 2011-2012 title game at seasons end. Would've been a shame if they didn't play, especaily with how that season played out. College football doesn't always get best -vs- best match-up and neither does the NFL, NBA, NHL, or many other sports. So when this match-up happens at seasons end, appreciate it!

Two of the best defenses in CFB history.
It's a shame both couldn't win that night.
