South Carolina senior quarterback Perry Orth, who started eight games last year and has taken the bulk of the first-team snaps this spring, suffered a broken collarbone during a Saturday scrimmage, a source told The State.

Orth, who will miss the remainder of spring practice, had a Saturday afternoon surgery scheduled and should be able to rejoin the team’s summer activities by June. The Gamecocks held a closed practice Saturday. A school spokesperson could not confirm the injury, directing all injury questions to head coach Will Muschamp, who could not be reached for comment Saturday.

He is the second quarterback to be injured this fall, joining sophomore Lorenzo Nunez, who suffered a hyperextended knee and sprained knee ligament in last Saturday’s practice. The team’s quarterbacks were “live” (meaning they could be hit, unlike most practices when they wear non-contact jerseys to reduce the risk of injury) during parts of last Saturday’s practice, but it’s unclear if they were live this Saturday or if Orth was hurt during a contact play.

Rough Spring so far for cocky. Hopefully Orth makes a full recovery.

UF has dealt with that for the last 4-5 years. Just crazy amounts of injuries in the Spring.

Why would the QBs be "live" in any practice?

This happened last spring too. Our team is living in the fricking hospital (or at least the training room) again right now.

Sucks to hear but glad it's just a collarbone.

Leaves the door wide open for McIlwain, as he was already splitting first team reps.

Boom needs to maybe tone it down a notch in the Spring I'm thinkin' - although, on the other hand, neither of those guys were gonna start IMHO.

Gotta find the sweet spot somewhere between the no-contact pussy drills Spurrier had run during the Spring the past couple of seasons, and the full contact crazy man drills I keep hearing about coming from Boom's camps.

At least you gotta blue or yellow jersey the QBs.

I would figure Nunez or Orth would be your top returning guys. Who do you expect to start at QB?

This may be a blessing in disguise due to the amount of QB's we have on the rooster. Look for Mcllwain and Scarnecchia to make strides this spring which will be beneficial when fall comes. Making practices live for everybody might seem like a bad idea but if we have done that with Mitch last year then we would have known he couldn't preform under live conditions.

One of the main other three in no particular order ... Scarnecchia, Mitch, McIlwain.

Orth was probably set-up by Boom to take this lick today .... a game kid, former walk on, he'll be a great coach one day but he is not big game QB material.

Nunez was gonna be moved to WR or Utility anyways.

It was always gonna be Mitch, Scarnecchia or McIlwain in no particular order.

The press is making more outta the loss of Nunez and Orth because they were all we really had last year after Mitch went down.

I thought Nunez was legitimately good last year. Reminded me a lot of Connor Shaw with his mobility

You must have been taking a piss or grabbing a beer when he threw all the interceptions

Big game? He couldn't beat the Citadel. Sorry the young man got hurt, but I couldn't imagine having to sit through another year with him starting.

I honestly feel like Scarnecchia should transfer at this point. He will never be the starter at South Carolina unless all the other QBs come down with a season-long flu at the exact same time.

Nunez was incredibly raw. Used his athleticism to run around, but he didn't protect the football the way Shaw did.

Wide-open QB race. My money is on Scarnecchia...

Roper loves him so far.

He delivers a good ball, is a good game manager, throws a pretty pass, will surprise you with his running ability for his size and ... he's a cerebral kid.

But who knows what is going to happen. Gotta have three on the roster, minimum, to enter the season. Might as well be those three. They are, at the very least, serviceable.
