Just curious, seems logical since the winner of that game has always had what amounts to an automatic bid.

It'll be fun if we can get an all-SEC final four one of these days

I always set my schedule around this game in early Dec and don't think I've ever missed one. But you have a good point. If there aren't gonna be divisions just award the SEC title to the team with the best record and be done with it. Playing that extra game before the CFP raises the risk of injury if nothing else.

unless we go back to a "east" "west" divisional bracket where you have a chance to have a 3 loss team in the SECCG, with the current top two teams face off, then yes the two SECCG participants will get in, as likely the next two teams in the SEC

winner of SECCG is playing for a first round bye...

Possible. But there are times where a two loss team makes the championship game. I’d imagine getting a third loss will knock them down below #12 most likely.

Most likely the SEC will have 3-4 teams in the 12-team playoff.

How CFP teams are selected under new format
The new 12-team College Football Playoff field will include the six highest-ranked conference champions, which will receive automatic bids.

The top four teams will receive a first-round bye to the quarterfinals.

The six highest-ranked teams remaining will round out the 12-team format.

It will not take long for a top 5 SEC team who is undefeated going into the SEC champ game or even with 1 loss, to sit their starters.

Not if a first round bye is on the line.

That is more valuable than risking an injury to a random starter imo.

Actually in 20200 two teams, Utah and Kansas State finished with 3 losses and ranked #8 and #9.
In 2021, Utah finished with 3 losses and ranked #11.

I skipped 202 because shortened schedules.

In 2019 it was Wisconsin at #8 and Auburn at #12 with 3 losses.

In 2018 it gets really interesting. You have Washington at #9, Florida at #10, LSU at #11 and Penn State at #12 all with 3 losses.

It seems to happen more often than not that a 3 loss team is ranked at or above #12. That said, there is not guarantee.

Absolutely. I would imagine Georgia would have sat Bowers, Monden and McConkey in the SECCG if we were assured to go to the playoffs even with a loss...or for that matter even if winning meant a first round bye. More importanta to have completely healthy players for the playoff than a first round bye and possibly end up losing a player of their caliber completely. Teams are more apt to take a chance they can still win the SECCG without a key player than risk losing him for the entire playoff.

Look at it this way.

Do you think Georgia would have played a hobbled Bowers and McConkey against Alabama and risked getting them further injured? They were both obviously hobbled badly against Alabama. I can assure you, we would have sat them both if we had been assured a playoff spot. With those two (and Smael Monden) we probably go through the playoffs fairly easily. Get one or both of those injured further and are in serious jeopardy of not making the finals.
