In 2011 alone, LSU beat 3 of the 4 BCS bowl winners.
Also, to answer OP, LSU fans are looking at recruiting rankings. For the past 4 years, Wisky hasn't been in the too 50. LSU has been perennially top 5 ish.
Literally nobody outside of Gordon on Wisky's roster would have a scholarship at LSU.
It doesn't mean LSU will win big, but that's why fans, who don't play the game, are confident.
