He realized he ain't a hot HC commodity like he thought. He wants to be a HC again, but he's gonna have to do some time at FAU and prove himself before any P5 programs will consider him seriously.

It's not unheard of for a coordinator to take a pay cut to take a HC job in an effort to better themselves for future HC positions.

Lane does a lot of drinking and whoring around... That's why Houston didn't offer him the head gig... He's gonna have to show he's matured before a bigger school will offer him a head coaching position.

I'm sure they were concerned about his behavior. But really, they lost their best coach ever, and don't want to be a stepping stone. With freshwater, there's no doubt he'd leave at the first opportunity.

So he spends a few years in a tropical paradise.

Win 8 games in a by all means conference and he looks golden. All the recruits he could want within walking distance of his home.

If he does not shite the bed for the next few years he will probably get an offer from a big time program. FAU is a great spot to land at.

I think you are confusing Palm Beach and Boca.

No. Spent a lot of time in both. To me Boca is the "poor man's" Palm Beach. The mega money goes to Palm Beach. The wealthy, but not quite as wealthy go to Boca.

Boca probably has a bit more youth than Palm Beach, but its still no South Beach.

Lane realized he's not as desirable a coaching prospect as he thought he'd be after coaching offense at Bama.

Sure. I get that. But why settle for 40% less money than being the LSU OC at a program that's got to be one of the Top 10 worst in all of college football?

Lane could have landed this job BEFORE his stint in Tuscaloosa. So from that perspective, his time coaching underneath Saban has been a total waste.

Maybe so. Seems to be though that if he could turn LSU's offense around, he'd get a much better job very quickly. It's one thing to do it at Alabama with all that talent. It's quite another thing to do it someplace else a second time.... playing against Alabama.

Maybe he don't want to work for Ed?

Who was knocking down his door trying to hire him as a HC in 2014 pre-Bama offer? Saban helped that man when he was a piranha in the coaching profession, it wasn't a waste.

LSU hired Ed freaking Orgeron as HC - taking a job with LSU is chancy at best right now.

May as well run your own show for a couple of years and see if you can make it on your own merits.

Not necessarily. I'm sure he learned a great deal under Saban. If he proves himself down there as a HC again I'm sure he will work his way back into a big job.

Lane could have had a head coaching job at a program like FAU back in 2014 had he be willing to go that low. Since 2005, there are only 9 programs out of 127 total who've had fewer wins than FAU... and one of those (Idaho) has already announced their move to the FCS level. FAU is literally one of the ten worst jobs in America.

There is no way a program like that wouldn't have jumped at hiring Lane Kiffin back in 2014 had Kiffin been willing to go to a program like that. The man coached 4.5 combined seasons at Tennessee and USC and never had a losing season. Of course a program like FAU would have jumped at hiring him back then.

But Kiffin thought he deserved better than a bottom-feeder C-USA job at that time, so he held out for better options.

Kiffin may have been a pariah for any major job at that time, but a man with a 65% winning percentage at Tennessee/USC would have been scooped up by a FAU or a FIU if he had wanted a job like that back then.

It is. But taking a job at a school that has never been able to win is just as chancy. Sort of like Chizik at Iowa State. There are just some jobs you don't take, and Iowa State is one of those. Hence his horrible record. Kiffin may realize the same thing at FAU.
