re: So if Alabama 'murderball' is the best way to win, why did they get away from it?

I suspect we are about the same age.

I still get jazzed for college football. I love rivalry weekend more than many things: all-day, jam-packed rivalry games and upsets. Toss on some BBQ and crack a cold one. What's not to love? I also firmly maintain the very first beer cracked at 8 AM on Labor Day weekend Saturday as Gameday starts up is the best beer of the year. I love tailgating and seeing family and friends. It's a very happy time of year even when we aren't very good.

The games used to mean so much more. But now they're turning into just that: games.

Damn, I'm in a reflecting kind of mood today.

I could not have put it better than that if I tried. I feel exactly the same way. The games, on campus scenes, atmosphere of college football still has a hold on me and will until I die. I just don't care nearly as much about the games/sport outside of Saturday as I used to - especially outside of the season.

And that's probably ok. Following recruiting, trolling message boards and obsession with it is a young person's game anyway

I thought this was going to be a basketball discussion.

How do you see the West turning out?

Arkansas is going to get one of Bama or LSU on the road.

Another poster said Golding's defense sometimes folded in shootouts, but it is clear some of Bama's major losses during that time weren't shootout style and their O was to blame.

The O isn't going to be there every game. Name one great offense that is going to travel every week. Defense travels, not offense. We've had OCs that frankly were better than others. This is a commitment on both sides of the LOS. And frankly, they play off each other. BAMA lost games in every era of the Nick Saban era.

Now that that foolishness is put to bed, again, let me repeat, Golding's defense was undisciplined and lacked fundamentals, and against the elite offenses, it showed itself. Otherwise, BAMA was putting so many high 4 and 5 stars on the field we were just going to destroy teams with talent. Both offense and defense. And we will continue to do that under Kevin Steele.

Because Saban is an innovator and Kirby copies him!

We changed on offense because, as good a defense as we had, when we played Ole Miss and some of these spread teams that ran RPOs, they scored points against us.

That’s right bitch. Ole Miss broke Saban.

To be clear:

Freeze broke one off into Saban

Suspect that Bama will be very good this year. It was shocking to see the amount of penalties last year. If that gets cleaned up, they’ll be fine. It was more than one game though and extremely un-Sabanesque

Going either pass or run dominant is actually a double-edged sword.
Heavy passing teams are more finesse oriented, while run offenses are more physical. That's ok for a while IF you've got the offensive talent to blow other teams away, but your practices being finesse and timing lose the physical aspect for the defense. In a couple of seasons you'll usually see the defense lose some of its effectiveness because they aren't challenged in practice, and get pushed around by some of the better teams on their schedule.
Moderation is the key to the success for the entire team.
