I hate when people say this, but True Grit is a much better book than a movie. The new movie is close though.

I haven't read it and it's the only book by Charles Portis I haven't read. But I know what you mean. That was a damn fine movie. Really good. And I do know that Portis uses a lot of local dialect in the book which Jeff Bridges and other actors in the movie handled very well. Let me put it this way...Portis thinks they did a fine job with the movie.

He's also not super into contractions, which was relatively well reflected in the movie.

I'll have to pay more attention to that the next time I see it. I do know he's very particular about dialect and accuracy with character portrayal. And there were several really good actors who originally tried out for the part Jeff Bridges landed.

And as for Thompson shooting himself, didn't he get a bad diagnosis? Went out on his own terms.

From what I understand, that's true. I just truly miss the guy.

I know. Just a few days ago, I went back and read the article he wrote on 9/11/01, published on 9/12.
This is the 9/11 article:
LINK

Here's another great story from the same web page:
Thompson: Bad craziness at Owl Farm
quote:

We had just settled down to drink whiskey and bet when the the night was shattered and ripped by a sudden explosion just in front of the house -- a crashing of metal and fire and wild screams of animals. I ran out on the porch with a shotgun and a huge police spotlight, just in time to be knocked back by another explosion and a wall of flame on the road. Chickens squawked and peacocks screeched in the treetops. It was like a bomb that had been dropped on a jungle. Flaming chickens fell out of the sky and hissed as they died in the snow. ...

It's probably a good thing that he and the sheriff were good friends. .

He had some really keen insight into the political realm. He even traveled with McGovern during his '72 campaign. It was 'Fear And Loathing:On The Campaign Trail'. That entire time, he missed very little.

There was never a dull moment any time Hunter covered anything.

Johnny Cash, Bill Clinton, Waltons, Crystal Bridges, Beautiful trout waters, Crater of Diamonds, Hot Springs, Cossotat Falls, Pettit Jean, Ozark Folk Center, Blanchard Springs,

More People, Sonny Burgess, Glen Campbell, Floyd Cramer, Jimmy Driftwood, Jerry Van Dyke, Al Greene, George Hamilton, Levon Helm, Albert King, Alan Ladd, Tracy Lawrence, Judge Reinhold, Mary Steenburgen, Harry Thomason, Conway Twitty, Lucinda Williams,

Just to name a few...

Some great craft brews happening, and the NW area of the state is unbelievable what is happening.

THe rivers, lakes, tributaries, floating, fishing, boating, is awesome. Mountains, Flatlands, we have it all. But thanks for asking.

I left off several newer folks such at Amy Lee who has musical prowess as well..

Right. Those are people that are known (and awesome), but probably not what Arkansas is known for. Kentucky is basketball, bourbon, bluegrass, and to some extent tobacco. I was just asking what Arkansas was known for, off the top of a non-native's head.

I can see that you (a) don't understand, and (b) have a great deal of state pride. The latter is admirable.

It was a (good natured) joke that while Kentucky may be known for only 3-4 things, Arkansas is best known just for Wal-Mart. It ruins a joke to have to explain it, but here we are.

But then I got into a much better conversation with your hog brethren, and I'd like to go back to talking southern literature.

I knew what you were looking for, didn't take shiny hook

Plus I agree with the last statement. Although I love what Walmart has brought into the state. Let me ask you this, would KY turn away a multibillion corporation with all that it entails for the economy, all of the supplier hubs relocated as well, the ensuing crystal bridges, Walton arts centers, etc.... NAH!

Rock on man. Lets both get back to the finer things in the thread!

Oh frick no we wouldn't turn it down. The best thing about it is the art museum it's birthed up there in NWA. Crystal Bridges taking that art from Fisk part time is a great move, and a great get.
