Burning couches. I love Hunter S. Thompson but he left Louisville for Owl Farm. Charles still in L.R.

Arkansas is known for burning couches? I hadn't heard. Thanks for your input.

I actually have a couple buddies that are related to Thompson. And while I love Portis, I can't think of another author who is as phenomenal a read but would seemingy be miserable to fricking talk to.

You're welcome. Ever read the story about the wildcat getting inside Hunter's house? It's classic!

Totally different personality types. However, if you've read most of their books, you'll see some common themes. Both are 'Gonzo' writers to some extent. Hunter was the master.

I've read almost all of Thompson's books. 'Hells Angels' is a favorite. I've read all but True Grit by Portis. 'Gringos' is really good. 'Dog Of The South' is another.

Why would he be miserable? He's not the author who blew his brains out- I would think I'd be a bit more leery of that guy.

Portis is an interesting guy...perhaps introverted somewhat but far from miserable. And he still lives in Little Rock. Hunter was a manic genius and could embellish with words like no other.

That's all I've ever read about him too- reclusive, doesn't like the attention etc but not that he was in any way a turd or horrible to be around.

To tell the truth, I've never read fear and loathing or true grit but I have watched the movies and I like true grit better even considering Johnny and Benicio.

I actually read True Grit last. It always seemed odd to me that it took me so long to read his most famous novel. Norwood is my favorite. And as for Thompson shooting himself, didn't he get a bad diagnosis? Went out on his own terms.

I'd be happy to get into a country music-off with yall (if Keith Whitley lived he'd be the best of his generation), but the point is this; what is Arkansas actually known for? I've got ducks and the Ozarks.

Are you just naming people from Arkansas now? That's not exactly "what you're known for," as in "brand."

I hate to go down this track but I'd counter with Jeff Davis and Abe Lincoln.

I wouldn't claim that criminal. At least he got what he deserved at Ford's Theater.

That's pretty accurate.

Fear and Loathing movie is very much like the book. I haven't read 'True Grit' either. But it's a great movie...both of them. I think Jeff Bridges perhaps even played a better 'Rooster Cogburn' than John Wayne...JMHO. He was great. Rumor is, 'Dog of The South' may be made into a film of sorts. I have some inside scoop on the matter so I'm hoping. It won't be an easy endeavor because of the type of story it is but it's an entertaining read.

I hate when people say this, but True Grit is a much better book than a movie. The new movie is close though.

My roommate freshman year wrote a (long) paper about why Abe Lincoln was the worst president ever. It heavily cited his father's thousand-page-or-so unpublished tome with the words "a-hole" and "liar" in the title. True story.
