There's no question Arkansas would have been a better geographical fit in the Big 8, but seeing how out of place your average Hog is on these boards I think they'd have been a better fit culturally as well.

quote:

I asked former Big Eight Commissioner (1971-80) and current interim Big 12 Commissioner Chuck Neinas if there ever was contact between the Big Eight and Arkansas when he was in charge. The answer was somewhat surprising.

"Interestingly enough, during my time at the Big Eight we did receive an inquiry from Arkansas about joining the Big Eight Conference," Neinas said. "Because at that time, Arkansas was closer to Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Missouri than its nearest Southwest Conference rival, which was SMU at the time. We did receive that inquiry from Arkansas."

"I told (longtime Arkansas coach and athletics director) Frank Broyles that we’d certainly be willing to discuss it with him, but I told that to Cliff Speegle, the commissioner of the Southwest Conference so at least he knew up front that Arkansas was interested in the Big Eight. But it never came about.

"Arkansas would have been a good fit in the Big Eight."

We were looking for a way to get out of the corrupt SWC

We have always been an outsider school and that's fine. We were the only non-texas team in the SWC. We were the most separated SEC school until Missouri was added. We would have been outsiders in the BiG 8 as well.

I can't find it in me to talk shite to a Mizzou fan. Known some decent people that went there and now all they are known for is safe spaces and Melissa Click.

Just another example of Neinas's incompetence really.

Lol, you can hear the southern accent pouring out of that article. Back then the more "southern gentleman" you had in your speech the more successful you likely were. Reading it to myself sounds like a Colonel Sanders-Foghorn Leghorn love-child.

Also, OP doesn't consider upon starting this thread that atleast Arkansas was making it's own choices on conference affiliation while Missouri, when it was time to change conferences, had their arse in the air for whichever conferences would take them, including the pac 12. Ya'll begged to get into the big 10 so hard it's really not even funny and also a little embarrassing.

Also, our head coach, who became athletic director in 1974,Frank Broyles was head coach at mizou for one year before choosing a more desirable job here.

I could see looking into that move to the big8 from a financial and proximity standpoint and the fact we were treated like a stepchild by the swc.It all worked out for the best.

This would have been good for College Football.

I was watching some of the Colorado game on Saturday, thinking about how the BIG 8 was good for college football. I believe the biggest error in CFB of the last 30 years was the BIG 8 going along with the Texas schools and forming the BIG 12.

I loved the old Nebraska-Oklahoma and Nebraska-Colorado rivalries. Mizzou-Nebraska produced some classic games as well. The BIG 8 should have stayed together... maybe added Arkansas, BYU, Utah, and Boise State to get to 12 teams... that would be a great league.

Without Oklahoma keeping them in check Texas probably would have went independent years ago while the swc crumbled around them.

"Hey baws, we hear there's this conference called the "big 8".

So I rarely say y'all, but I say "you guys" with a redneck twang.

Big 8 too cold. Big 8 too cold. Big 8 too cold.

Meh, this is an odd one. NW Arkansas is more of a Big 8 location. Most of the rest of the state is very much SEC.

I like being in the SEC, even if it is the toughest conference to win in. I wouldn't have minded being in the Big 8 if we had taken Texas A&M with us. I do miss the old Big 8 conference. Heck I miss the old SWC other then Texas.

The Big 12 however... no thank you.

When Arkansas bolted from the SWC I don't think Boise was playing in the FBS yet. The two Utah schools, Arkansas and Texas A&M would have had a solid footprint stretching throughout middle America with enough of a population base to keep the conference afloat.

What's with Arkansas fans and "Super Bowl" comments?

It's kind of silly.
