McCarron actually has played in the same amount of games and has accumulated more statistics than McElroy had entering his first year as a starter.

Matt Leinart technically did in 2003, since USC won the AP poll that season.

Not when a poster just said this: "All Bama needs from a redshirt sophomore QB is not to lose the game. With TR at RB and the OL, Bama shouldn't need the QB to win games for them."

That pretty much sounds like the formula used in 2008 and 2009.

practically everyone on here said Alabama won an NC despite McElroy. So it's not impossible. I'm guessing that you're banking on LSU winning despite JJ, right?

Alabama absolutely is one of the favorites to win the NC. They can win the NC. So can several other teams. The fact is, however, is that the preseason rankings need to be based on something substantive, and I think what better place to look than quarterback. Alabama doesn't have to win because of the quarterback, but that doesn't mean he's going to be the same as McElroy. Could be worse or less experienced or could be better. I have no doubt the two guys are more talented than him, but can they deal with the adversity the same? The pressure? Can they be leaders? Just a lot of unknown that talent alone won't solve that should warrant the top spot preseason IMO. but unless you are ranked in teh 15-20 range, preseason polls don't affect you.

The thread is about being the preseason #1. Not whether you can win the title. You're ranked in the top three to start the year, hence, you are a favorite to win the title.

How is that a reach? A dominating defense and strong running game is how Bama won 14 in 2009, 12 in 2008, and 13 in 1992. Considering Bama won 2 national titles with the stars aligned that way, I'll take it every year.

So the record in 1992 is indicative of what you're going to do next year?

And if we're talking about preseason polls I need something more than, "this is the formula we used nearly 20 years ago" argument.

LSU's team last year is a great example of there being more to a football team than offense. Our offense was awful most of the time, but we won 11 games because of a stout defense, good special teams, and gutsy coaching.

Yall didn't have Trent R. on yalls team last year, and both of iur qbs are already better than JJ IMO.

I honestly hope we aren't preseason number 1. Why would you ever want to be preseason number 1?

wrong, easy schedule and lack of a championship game makes it easier for them to be undefeated. not the best team in the country.

Just the other day, I was thinking about the Sooners . I might actually dislike the Sooners even more than I dislike the Whorns ...and that's a lot.

It's just the football team. I actually like both, the state of Texas and Oklahoma. ...and Louisiana, of course!

It's an old SWC thing.

Hell, much of Texas even feels like home to me.

Can't keep a 24-0 lead and lose. Don't deserve to be picked #1.......or 2
