I wonder what percentage of SEC mascots were named after divisions or brigades or whathaveyou of the Confederate Army. Carolina's is from the Revolutionary war I believe.

The nickname for the Auburn Tigers comes from a verse in a 1770 poem titled, "The Deserted Village," which was penned by Oliver Goldsmith. A passage reads, "where crouching tigers wait their hapless prey." The poem also mentions that "Sweet Auburn" is the "loveliest village of the plain."

There was the allusion back when they were named that because the newspapers said some revolutionary war captain and his men fought 'like fighting gamecocks'.
Also, gamecocks will fight til death, which I find particularly admirable.... arse.

If you really want me to address it, I think we had the goat as a mascot in the early 1900s for one or two games because a farmer or frat brother brought it to a game and - since we didn't have a symbol to represent the university's atheltic interests at that point - tt was just a convenient association. The goat's last game (the one we lost) saw the goat barbecued later that night. So... If you want to harp on a century old animal that happened to show up to a game or two, then I guess it's within your right?

Because anyone who gives a frick about USC knows that we weren't named after the animal, we were named after a general in the Revolutionary War - Thomas "The Fighting Gamecock" Sumter. The Revolution was also where the Palmetto and Crescent come from. Now, obviously, we use the animal as the physical manifestation, but, just like LSU's Tigers, the name has a deeper meaning.
And BTW, it's not "as it's mascot." It's "its mascot."
Good thing it's not a rivalry. If it were, this shite would get outta hand.

Well in USC's case, a Gamecock is a football player and represents the fighting spirit of some revolutionary war fighters. Having an original mascot is cool.

I agree....we should change our name from the Gamecocks to the Monstrouscocks.....and then patent it so that everyone has to say "the University of South Carolina Monstrouscocks" whenever they refer to our teams. Or at the very least, force UGA fans to have to say it...

It's funny, because you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. First off, those roosters are far from starved. They are treated like royalty at all of the farms I have visited. The good ones are even given 2 and 3 females to pillage as the see fit 24 hours a day.
But on the actual subject of the thread, gamecocks are a breed of chicken with different sub-breeds under them such as Grays, Hatch, Round Heads, Kelso's, Black Butchers, etc etc etc.. I don't give a frick what your "definition" that you found says. Many people like these chickens for reasons that are completely irrelevant to cockfighting. They are great chickens for people that live in areas heavily populated with predators, such as coyotes, raccoons, or foxes, because they roost in trees instead of on the ground at night and are also much better at flying and escaping these predators than normal chickens.
And lets just completely ignore the fact that they are MUCH prettier chickens than normal breeds with their vibrant color contrasts and tall slender builds.

The OP must want all teams to have arbitrary generic mascots that appear everywhere instead of unique ones that have historical ties to the team's state.
