Should scholarships be reserved for those without nil deals?

My son is at Alabama and we're paying his way out of pocket...I just my arse to give him an opportunity I didn't have.

Meanwhile, kids making millions are getting their school paid for. Seems like a waste of money when they could clearly pay for it themselves.

What if they had to choose a scholarship or nil deal UNLESS the nil deal is less than the price of tuition... Or something similar?

Then they would just get student loans which will get cancelled by you know who.

Either way you’re spending the money.

The only solution to this is regulation with a minimum and maximum payout to maintain status in the highest tier.

Well, there’s another solution, but no one except G6 schools will like it.

so your son isn't smart or athletic enough to get a scholarship so another student should have to give up theirs for him?

I think this is a great idea. If a kid has a 6-figures NIL deal they can afford to pay for college.

I agree with this. It should be like how many ivy league schools handle students who earn external scholarships. They simply take the scholarship money and just say that part is paid towards the financial assistance they are paying the student already. They don't give the money to the student in any way.

CFB players should not be given a scholarship to the school when they are making more than enough to cover the cost of attending school. Scholarships should be given to those who can't get any NIL deals or better yet, paid for other sports that don't typically provide any sort of scholarshps. If you can pay you should pay.

I like it. The Texas schools give very little in the way of scholarships to academically gifted kids who are not of an "oppressed class" and who have parents of middle class means or more. It sickens me to see how much donors will give to NIL while middle class families break their finances for their kids to have a better future.

Majority of academic scholarships are partial. Hardly ever do kids get a full ride on an academic scholarship. I figured someone who I assume went to college would know this from experience.

First of all, the NIL numbers you see floated around are wildly inflated. Sure a handful of superstars may be making some good bank, but the vast majority aren't making nearly what everyone thinks.

Secondly, splendid idea! I vote Bama be the guinea pig for this model so the rest of us can sit back and see how it works.

I see your point. But here is the dilemma as I see it.

Making Jalen Milroe or Brock Bowers pay for their tuition from their million dollar NIL deals would not free up any scholarship money for other kids.

The NCAA limits football to 85 scholarships. If those players weren't on scholarship and paid their own way, and if that freed up scholarships for more players, it would create an even bigger imbalance between schools. Suddenly Alabama and Georgia would have, in effect, maybe 150 "scholarship" football players...either scholarship players or those who have made six figures and can pay their own way. Vandy and Miss State would have much fewer. UAB and Troy...even fewer.

The number has to stay at 85 for everyone...regardless of how much money the players make in NIL deals. What you're suggesting could never happen because of scholarship limits.

I love how you guys are now all for socialistic ideas and hate capitalism.

Sorry your son isn't good enough to earn a scholarship but those aren't "practice trophies" given to the less physically fortunate
