The whole "we had X losses and other team had Y losses" is a terrible argument in a vaccuum.
Not all schedules and losses are created equally.
Lots of undefeated teams were not voted #1 for whatever reason. It was one of the things that led to frustration with the old school polls and why things like the BCS/playoffs ultimately came to be.
