The problem is not all schools have an extra million dollars to pay this. That is why it will never happen because the big boys could afford it, but not all schools could.

which gives rich schools a competitive advantage.

i'm all about it (the small stipend). we're not Communists, right?

but, i'm not for it if it changes football.

No! There is no way it would ever be fair enough to the smaller schools with smaller budgets. They get free educations which at the minumum is probably 80k and up to 200k. And I've had friends that played college sports and they get scholarship allowance checks every semester of about $1000 - $2000. So when you dont have to pay for food, school, or books, that is a lot of money to a college kid. I think theres a lot of whining taking place today because the market is huge and everybody is making money off of them. Go to school(FOR FREE), get an education, and then make your own money.

The only thing I can agree with is the jersey sales. Maybe they could set back a small portion of the sales and if that athlete graduates he will receive the money. If he doesn't, it's donated to a charity.

I think they should get a portion equal to what a professional athlete gets for any mention of their name, or use of their likeness. Jersey sales, video games, posters/prints, etc.

Put the money is some type of trust and restrict how much they can withdraw while they're still student athletes, then give it to them once their eligibility is up.

Nope! They're already getting $60k-$80k worth of free school, room and board, and meal plans so that is their payment.

Yes, they play football and have to remain at a good enuogh level of performance to stay on the team and continue to receive these things, but damn, if I was a good enough athlete to play college football for 4 years I would be thanking God for a free ride through college to get a degree in case football wasn't what I did after college.

I hate seeing the media make it look like athletes are so "poor" in terms of their years at college when in reality they have everything paid for via their scholarships, room and board, meal plans, and in most cases extra left over from pell grants, etc.

use of their likeness

That will never happen because it is vague...hence likeness. Pro players get money form games becasue it says their names on the back of the jerseys...so it is more specific.

What good does paying players do? Seriosuly.

Some are trying to make the arguement that it would eliminate the situations with Cam, AJ, tOSU, etc. I don't agree. Teams/boosters that pay players do so for competitive advantage. So if everyone got $100 a week, some people would still break the rules and give $200.

No matter what you do, no matter what area of life; people are always going to break the rules/ push the limits. The best solution is to have systems in place that catch those people and punish them accordingly.

It's really not that vague right now. When you play the next installment, Alabama's QB with be a white kid wearing number 10 jersey. It's easily determined they are using AJ McCarron's likeness.

Plus, with the rule changes I'm talking about, EA Sports would be allowed to put the names on the jerseys.

Any half arse attorney will be able to argue that away in court.

AU's QB in the latest EA game was #2 and was black...who has the likeness?

yes....
every school has to pay the same amount.....
students do not have to attend classes, optional
if student accepts pay, he has to play in college
for all 4 years or take a scholarship and turn pro after 3 seasons....but has to attend classes.

Its too hard to regulate how much they would be paid. So I say NO.

I am in favor of letting them work summer jobs, and camps to earn extra cash that way.

Well, if the argument to paying players is that it will eliminate p4p schemes, how much would those players need to earn before those schemes stopped? including an extra 400$ isn't going to change the kid who is supposedly taking 5x that a month.

I think the argument that these kids are getting a free education is a bit of a joke in face of the graduation rates as well as that scholarships are only for a single year. There needs to be much more emphasis on these kids getting actual degrees that offer them something beyond becoming a PE teacher at a middle school.

On a slightly related note, I think all of the universities should demand that the ncaa open up their books so we can see how much they are actually taking home themselves.

Well take on this question. These players make tons of money for the atletic Dept, Correct.

I had a friend that was an Engineering major at LSU. He recieved 27k a year starting his sophomore year working for said Dept. The money that paid his salary came from grants. The university makes money off of all departments which have students that get paid a salary from grants, why not football. Engineering, Geology, and Football all could recieve grant money. Just a thought i was having.

OMG how often does this thread get made? I been here since Sept and its already been brought up too much.

The answer is NO. Emphatically no.

They are getting a chance at an educaton at minimum, and they are getting prepared for the NFL at best. I may be a fossil in my thiking but I still believe in amateurism. I thought it sucked when they started using the Dream Team in the Olympics.

The main thing is they are getting a $20-$40,000 education for playing football. If they are smart enough to take advantage of it, great, if not, thats their own fault. You can lead a horse to water but you cant make him drink.

Seems to me that jersey sales would be the best way to handle this if players were to be paid.

And to that end, just saw a Tweet quoting Jim Calhoun that the UConn players have been on campus a total of 9 days since the start of the Big East Tournament.

grant money like this comes from the government... i can see no good reason for the government to fund salaries for what is supposed to be amateur athletics... esp when some of these are very profitable programs making tens of millions of dollars

JMO but we should really just encourage more schools to drop out of the 1a football ranks (much like Ivy League football teams once did)... there is no benefit to spending a lot of money on football when you don't make a lot of money in return

This.

Add it up, these kids are making six figures. Room/Board/ Tuition/ Books & Supplies/ clothing (team stuff is all they wear most of the time), etc. They're making more than a lot of folks on here.
