not to piss off the baseball purists (i'm usually one about most things), but I've always thought it looked ridiculous for coaches to wear a full baseball uniform

I am a high school coach and played in college and I am not for wearing a uniform either. Kind of sucks that we have to and are the only sport that does. Oh, and I am not fat either!!

Nah. Just middle class.

They are paid to teach 19-22 year old jocks how to play a sport. I'm not going to ask anyone to wear a suit and tie when it's 90+ degrees. I really don't care what they wear as long as they are winning.

Technically, baseball coaches have to wear uniforms because they have to step on the field of play all the time.
Because it would be out of the question for them to walk out to the mound wearing a polo?

Baseball coaches walk onto the field just as much as football and basketball coaches do.

I don't know why softball coaches don't wear uniforms. If I have to make a guess, I would say it's due to fact that a lot of the coaches are middle aged females.

Baseball coaches have to step on the field to give lineups, make pitching changes, mound visits and argue calls with the umpires. Coaches in other sports can speak to referees on the sidelines all the time during the course of a game. Baseball managers can't do that because umpires are so far away. They have to step on the field to argue. If coaches in other sports were allowed to step on the field of play and talk to the referees during any stoppage in action, the games would never end.

And they call timeout when they step out there. Football and basketball coaches are on the field/court a ton because there's a lot of breaks in play. There is no reason they have to wear uniforms outside of some dumb rule in the book. Football and basketball coaches basically do talk to the refs during every stop in play.

To be honest, younger females look weird wearing baseball uniforms as well. I don't see why people think managers look ridiculous. The uniform is essentially a buttoned down shirt that is always tucked in and they always wear belts with their pants. They dress better than most people do every day.

most people wear spandex pants, a shirt with a number on the front and back, visible colored socks and baseball shoes?

It must be slippery walking around on that turf.

This is what the English call a full kit wanker.

I don't think they should wear the team's uniform, but they should be required to wear a uniform. Different but similiar, built for the sidelines and not the field of play.

Whatever it takes to get basketball coaches out of suits. What a waste of a suit.

Nike, Addidas, UA, etc. they all expect the coaches to wear gear so they can market it to fans. The closest we saw to bringing back some dressiness was Dooley and he was such a royal screwup he managed to frick that idea up for decades.
Al Golden still dresses for games @ UM.

I say do the Bobby Cox look, but lose the cleats and socks and just throw some loafers on there and you're all set.

Like baseball coaches do? I think they should, personally. Granted, at first it would look ridiculous, but after while I think coaches would start getting in better shape and looking good in their uniforms.

Youd cream yourself to see Sumlin in a Yell Leader suit wouldn't you?

He may have more freedom in either his coaching contract or the schools contract with Nike etc. Or perhaps the school or sponsor contract doesn't give him bonuses/incentives for wearing a lot of gear or if it does he doesn't care about them. Who knows? I do wish coaches would dress more fashionably again but the GATORADE SHOWER might be the real reason.
