The Third Saturday In October is a great rivalry. I'm all for a little trash talk, but this is just excessive and kicking a team while they're down. Tennessee has been awful for quite some time now, but they're improving. Vanderbilt is at its best ever right now, and that's still mediocre.

Besides, I enjoy ribbing all of my UT friends.

Actually Vandy is not at its best ever, but still light years better than the second place school in that state.

Ok, we're at our best since the 1920s. Boy do we miss the SIAA when we could claim all of those conference titles

The advent of the athletic scholarship also really hurt Vanderbilt, Duke, Stanford, West Point, Annapolis etc. in football.

I've always liked Vanderbilt, so I don't want to have them as a rival.

I can't even comprehend the sports scene withouth Scholarship. I guess college baseball that many times looks just a cut above High School. I guess semi-pro leagues and NFL/NBA farm teams?

That doesn't stop some unnamed teams.

Regarding Vandy-Bama being a possibly better matchup the last 2 years I'd disagree despite UT getting beat by Vandy. Here's the thing about UT vs. Vandy: I don't know how long you've followed Vandy football but Vandy has always played Tennessee hard. Y'all could suck all year long but your guys were always up for that game and playing with everything they had (UT-Bama tends to be the same way but both teams are out to kill) even if the scoreboard or W-Ls didn't come close to reflecting it. Did you watch the cocktail bowl this year? THAT is the way Vandy played us, mean and as nasty as hell. UT never gets ready for Vandy the way Vandy gets ready for us and bravo to you beating us when you can, winning now and again when we've had great teams, catching us not paying attention, or when we're down - a win is a win and Vandy's won when they had no right to kick their own arse because they've played with an intensity and passion.

I can't say that Vandy never earned a win against us -- that they were all when we played bad/didn't take it seriously or the last 2 when were at rock bottom -- because even when we've been down Vandy has played us like monsters. Unlike many teams, you've earned every single win you've gotten against us in the modern era.

It's not surprising to me that between your AD smartening up about scheduling a few years ago and a competent head coach you've been able to get some good seasons in. IMO, you were always better than you were given credit for and if you'd been in any other conference you'd have a lot more to lean on than this year and the 1920s in terms of success.

That said, I think Franklin's gone on the first train out of Nashville. Too much smoke and mention of him interviewing places. BUT I do think you should be able to maintain a better level of competition than in years past and I hope you stay that way.

I've always been taught that better competition helps even good and great teams and players reach their potential. If Vandy is good or at least decent it helps UT, especially in postseason play. I believe better competition can only help our conference and our state for Vandy to not be a laughingstock. I don't think Vandy will ever make it powerhouse status for several reasons that can't really be changed without huge structural changes but I do think you can maintain where you're at if your AD will support you and you don't hire an incompetent.

At any rate congrats on a well earned bowl win and season. I'm looking forward to next year whether Franklin stays or not (kinda wish he'd stay so we could beat him before he departs).

Overall, I think that was a very fair assessment. I'm not going to quote it all, simply because of the length. Good luck to you with Butch. I'm already looking forward to next year's game.

Oh yeah, I totally agree that Vandy-UT is much bigger for Vanderbilt, largely due to UT viewing it as an easy win (see Dooley in 2011 after sneaking one out in Neyland). Vandy fans just get so tired of taking shite all year that any win is big.

The sad thing is that when that Dooley vid came out most UT fans were mortified because Doolz acted like he won the BCS which for Dooley it probably was.

Believe it or not, UT campus in is a stoic kinda place compared to other campuses and has been for as long as I can remember. I guess we're still used to Fulmer who never got too excited about anything. But even before Fulmer the student body and faculty was tame compared to the rest of the country no matter what the issue was.

Dooley's video would've been embarrassing to us either way (even if we didn't take Vandy for granted).

Honestly though, since I don't live in Nashville or listen to Nashville sports radio I don't hear the shite talking that goes on. The few times I've listened to that noise I've wanted to jab my brains out with a set of chopsticks. Those in Nashville seem to take things far more seriously and to a whole new level of stoopid regardless of fan affiliation. I don't know if that's a product of radio or what but it's confounding.

Most of the Vandy alums I know personally (and of course, some of this is East-o-centric due to my present location) are Tennessee fans so there's never been much of a 'war.' The online UT fans I see bitching and moaning are usually from and/or reside in Middle, TN and they tend to be pretty nutty. Of course, I've seen Vandy Mania rants that are off the wall -- I suppose the internet almost always brings out the inner a-hole in people.

That all said, I'd get tired of being seen as a cupcake by a lot of UT fans too (especially since we live together) even if no one ever trash talked about it. I can definitely understand that aspect.

No, I'm not for ruining the TSIO because it's been a historically significant game in the SEC.

Except when the TSIO is actually FSIO?

I'm joshing with ya because of the 80s early 90s joke that if you drive in downtown Athens with your windows rolled down they'll throw a diploma at you. Plus I've met so many North Georgia Dawgs that were pretty extreme. Deliverance was actually filmed and set in JawJa and some of those North Georgia Dawg fans leave no doubt as to why.
