I've lived in both as well, and I can say that your experiences in either city will vary drastically (like most major cities) on which suburb you live in. In the ATL area I lived in Norcross (horrible - hated it) and Newnan (loved it). In the Birmingham area I lived near Green Springs Hwy (awful) and off of 280 in Mountain Brook (aside from the traffic, awesome).
ATL has at least one benefit - it's divisions are much more easily described to outsiders, thanks to the Perimeter.
Savannah - beautiful place to visit, absolute craphole to live in (my wife lived there for years).
Personally, I grew up in Shelby County (Alabaster to be specific) and I loved that portion of the state.
I would say, though, that considering that the SECCG is already always in Atlanta - probably not there. I think that the baseball tournament should be in Montgomery ( Riverwalk Stadium) or Nashville ( Herschel Greer Stadium), and while the Met is nice, those stadiums are probably nicer. I know that Greer is more iconic.
Considering we're basically talking about the corporate offices of the SEC (as opposed to a fan-based event), I've thought about it a bit and honestly I can't think of a better place than Houston.

Bham is certainly a smaller version of Atlanta - the demographics and the mood of the cities are eerily similar
The hoover Met is a nightmare - only one way in and out.
Riverwalk stadium in MGY would be fantastic - that whole area is amazing. But I would also like to see the baseball tourney in Chattanooga - GREAT place to take the kids and their stadium is also amazing.
Railroad Park in Bham? No thank you...

Houston wouldn't be bad, but why we'd put it in the fan city for our 7th best team is a little unclear.

For Baseball, Autozone Park in Memphis would be an awesome venue.

I think the SEC HQ is fine in Birmingham. I haven't really heard a compelling reason for why it should be moved (black helicopter conspiracy theories seem to be the main thing people cite). Birmingham is centrally located and big enough to get the job done. How many people actually work at SEC HQ anyway? I can't imagine it is that many. It would cost money and upset people's lives (the employees) for no reason.
The SEC does a decent job spreading the events around:
Alabama: HQ, the baseball tourney, and Media Days
Georgia: SECCG and the Chick-fil-a kickoff
Louisiana: Sugar Bowl
Tenn: semi-perm home of basketball tourney (which I think is a great move, BTW).
Florida: Spring coaches meeting.
Several other places have had a taste of big SEC events by hosting things in the past (Memphis, ATL, NOLA, have all hosted the basketball tourney, and St. Louis will in the future). Edit: Not to mention all the bowl games in places like Orlando, Tampa, Nashville, Jacksonville, Memphis, Houston, Shreveport, etc).
If anything, I think moving the media days to a bigger media outlet would make sense. Maybe ATL or Nashville. If we ever expand into NC then possibly do it in Charlotte since that is home to the SEC Network (but don't do it now, keep the $$ in SEC states to the extent possible).

I don't understand why the SEC has not put Media Days out for bid to various cities. Seems they could make some money off it.

Odd that the SEC office is only a building filled with non athletic related employees...according to Bhamtide & several other bama fans.. yet bama fans are united in keeping it in Alabama. Why? Bring it down to N'Awlins & we'll have just da guys to handle da scheduling & da refs. And am sure we can find plenty of "Yat's" to fill all the other apparently meaningless positions. A few slots in the main lobby, 4-5 video poker games in the johns & revenue to pay for the change won't be a problem. But Nashville makes too much sense, so it will never happen.

Have you ever been to Greer Stadium? It is a craphole. I used to love going to games there growing up, but that stadium needs to be replaced badly.
