Alabama fans keep pushing the 104-12 record thing to cope with the hire, so let’s look a little more closely at DeBoer’s career:

Sioux Falls (2005-2009):
67-3 overall record. Obviously CFB was a completely different game at that point in time, at the NAIA level which is below FBS, FCS, and D2, where they were beating mighty programs such as the Lindenwood College for Women, Nebraska Wesleyan, Dakota Weslayan, Doane, Dordt, and a bunch of other colleges you’ve never heard of.

Fresno State (2020-2021):
12-6 overall record. Aside from the Covid year, went 9-3 with 2 narrow wins against ranked teams. Blown out by Boise State, lost to Hawaii and Oregon and narrowly beat UTEP in their bowl game.

Now the interesting part about his Washington tenure:
Out of his 11 wins last season, 6 were by 10 points or less.

Out of his 14 wins this season, 10 of them were by 10 points or less including several very close games against sub par competition. He was obviously just blown the frick out by the only elite team they played this year.

Just wanted to put some context on his 104-12!!!!!! Record that Bama fans keep spewing. His Washington team wasn’t dominant by any means in a crappy PAC 12 conference, and most Alabama fans agreed that they were going to be the next TCU next year with a huge dropoff. Without a Heisman finalist QB and a Biletnikoff WR, Washington could’ve easily lost 5+ games this year. Very risky hire IMO when you put context to his Washington tenure and remove his slightly-better-than-D3 players

He took freaking Washington to a national championship game. Turned them around from 4 wins the year before he got there and went 11-2. He also is a combined 5-0 against the the so called "better" candidates, Lanning and Sark. All these hires are going to be a risk after following a legend, but he's the "best" risk Alabama could have taken.

Sonny Dykes took freaking TCU to the national championship game after they won 5 games the year before. Not that Alabama fans want to understand the context of the situation, but there’s more to it than “DeBoer took Washington to the national championship” if you look at this season objectively and game by game

If he didn't have Penix, he wins 5-6 games max this past season.

Mmmmember when the gumps said Jimbo, Gus, and Chizik only played in the natl title game because of their generational QB's? I mmmember

He’s not Saban. I think we should all be happy just for that

Well tell me who should Alabama have hired? The guys that are a combined 0-5 against him? Kirby? Kiffin? You want to throw out his ridiculous record so you can play fantasy . The fact is he's won a ton of games in his coaching career and was 25-3 at Washington and was on a 21 game winning streak.

It is interesting in that when BK was hired Bama fans dismissed his 2 Division 2 championships but now they say DeBoer’s NAIA wins prove he can coach at any level and he’s THE guy.

That said, I don’t dismiss DeBoer’s NAIA record. He won and beat teams with similar talent levels.

I think they made a good hire but his problem is that he will never be good enough, no one is good enough to fill Sabans shoes.

10-2 or god forbid 9-3 in year 1 and some Bama fan may actually burn his house down.

Should we have hired an assistant like Ohio St, Oklahoma, Clemson, Georgia, Oregon, and Texas? Or a mid major HC like Florida, Tennessee, and FSU? Perhaps a scandal ridden coach from a Bible college? You guys act like his 2 years turning Washington from a 4-8 team to an 11 and 14 win team is a bad thing.

Well….. did you watch the national championship game? If he helped develop those mechanics Penix showed, Bama will be in trouble.

I didn’t realize how overrated Penix was from playing in the PAC10 until the title game. He was awful

No one, including rivals, that Alabama would get the best hire. Who is the best hire out there? You'd say Saban, but he wants to do things now on his own terms. Who can blame him for wanting a little more of life rather than what the fans want? No one could deny Saban and his family. He did his way for a very long time. I will be first to argue he did it better than bill Belichick. Bill was and is older than Saban. Bill does not have the NFL or ESPN saying he was the greatest ever known to the sport of football. That is Nick Saban that created his own legacy. He left Alabama at the end, but Nick was more than only Alabama. He was a LSU Tiger. He was a Michigan State Spartan. He was a Miami Dolphin. Nick never left you alone as a fan. He still remembers it all. I can almost assure that he remembers the LSU vs. Kentucky win more than anyone else.

Everyone else at the NAIA level also had NAIA-level talent.

Had a losing record the year before he arrived. That is a monumental turnaround.

And what was this year going to look like after Penix and all those Peterson 5th and 6th year seniors left?

No one knows. DeBoer hasn’t been anywhere long enough to know how he sustains programs….aside from Sioux Falls.

If the roles were reversed, we’d be calling it a slam-dunk hire and the Bama fans would be saying we made a desperate hire.

That’s the truth.
