points allowed is not all on the defense. it has a lot to do with special teams, field position, and ball control. yes, it's a more important stat, but it's not a stat that can be entirely attributed to one unit

Does Total Defense, which is based on yards, not take into account field position or ball control as well?

that's not only a reflection of the defense, just like points scored per game is not all on the offense. lsu 2011 is a perfect example
