Once you get in, you can skate through any school if you just want the sheepskin. They can all be good or bad.

Why do people get so hung up on this? This isn’t the Ivy League. They “don’t come here to play school!” Who cares? At the end of the day all the rant cares about is…. “Did we win the game?”…. except for maybe Vanderbilt.

If you are a graduate who has a job in some sort of management function then you should understand better than most that in 2024 the place where someone got "a degree" only matters to the extent that you decide you can trust them to work hard and embrace improvement. We've begun actively hunting kids from smaller schools who worked their way through or played sports in college and have a chip on their shoulder over kids from the "good" regional schools in our industry (most of the SEC schools represented on this board fit in this box). And it's served us extremely well.

You can catch kids up on a knowledge base. It's very difficult to take a modern kid who doesn't understand (or have the desire) putting their nose to the pavement and grinding how to do it.

It seems like even having a degree, outside of specialized fields, is becoming less and less important.

It used to mean that someone was actually "educated," these days, a lot of college graduates are legitimate morons.

We've devalued the college degree with years of nonsense, and eventually the market realized that a lot of these kids that we trusted had at least some baseline of knowledge due to their degree flat out don't anymore. And on top of that, finishing school at most places (outside of certain degrees) doesn't even require any sort of fortitude or truly difficult work, so you can't even count on them having some level of built in work ethic.

So the kids you are hiring aren't really much more technically advanced than others and they generally have more an expectation of advancement and upward movement because that's what people from their type of schools have done for decades.

It all leads to employers looking at it and saying "nah", and looking for kids whose resume screams "I work hard" even if they have limited technical knowledge and experience. It will certainly influence how I work with my kids on where they go to college and the type of college experience I want them to have.

Anyone know what UGA's Terry school of business ranks compared to UT McCombs?

McCombs is the 5th best undergraduate business school according to us news.

The AR for Ole Miss has always been near 100. They’ll admit anyone if they can pay. Jerrell Powe got in and he couldn’t even read.

When I've hired people I have always prioritized work history vs education.

It's easy to tell a lot about a person just from their resume, however it's likely that AI will change a lot of that.

Oklahoma-30
Ole Miss-27
Florida-12
Georgia-14

Despite having fewer resources and lower academic floor… Ole Miss punches well above it’s weight in academic achievement.

Why should we take these rankings seriously?

It is no different than JD Power.
If you pay enough money to the company doing the rankings, they give you the factors used in the rankings and permit you to manipulate your scoring.

If you pay more than that, they will change the scoring to suit your own requests.

Polling/surveying = selling indulgences
