Auburn's argument to appear in the 2004 BCS title game ended when they trailed 6-4 Alabama by a score of 6-0 going into the half.

It's a pretty dumb reason for exclusion considering all the championship game participants and winners who struggled with rivals during the regular season and weren't penalized for it.

Auburn also thumped a really good UGA team the same month.

Exactly. There were two reasons. OU and USC's preseason rankings and Auburn scrambling to fill BGSU spot with the citadel when BGSU op'ed out and played OU instead

nope. i believe the bs reason they used was we played Citadel that year due to someone cancelling on us.

I still remember an online poll ESPN did that asked the nation who should be the real number 2 team. Online the results showed Auburn at 70%, Oklahoma at 30%. Ten minutes later ESPN reported the poll but swapped the results to favor Oklahoma. The fix was in and the media got the match up they wanted. Fvckers LOL

I'll admit that I just took the score from the Sugar bowl so I don't know exactly how it went down.

Still Auburn wouldn't have beat USC that's a fact.

it was 16-0 with minutes left in the 4th quarter kiddo. That game was over. The score was not an indicator of how close the game was

But more importantly, it'd been roughly 10 years since Auburn truly was at a natty level, and the national sports media refused to give Auburn a lot of respect when two other powerhouses were in the mix for it.

We beat up on you when you were what, 6th? Then handled another top 10 team in VT with relative ease in a boring low scoring game.

I have little doubt we would have given USC a better, perhaps very good game.

The same USC that needed a 4th quarter TD to topple the mighty 4-7 Stanford Cardinals?

We've been through this before, you simply quote the box score and don't have any coherent memories of 04'. USC struggled to win that game.

Thanks to a phantom offensive PI call on VT.
