If we get legal weed in Texas soon, I think this would be a hit.

The SEC footprint is huge ... the biggest coverage wise, in terms of square mileage, maybe bigger than the ACC and Big Ten population wise I would even guess.
A buck per household would not be out of the question if they can sell it to the major cable and satellite outlets and promise not raise rates for the life of the TV deal ... what, 15 yrs or so?

"And promise not to raise the rates for the life of the tv deal". Exactly my worry. The history of most pay channels is the price does go up, often significantly, after the viewers are "hooked" on the progrmas offered. What is a dollar to today mite well be $4-$5 in 4-5 yrs down the road. What did Cox cost initially? Now, we get major increases all the time, due to rising costs, BS, etc.

They always talk about the a la carte options that are supposed to be coming down the pipe in the cable/satellite services. I imagine the higher prices are reflective upon that.
They've been talking about that for years though, so who knows.

I am a night owl and damn near switched to Dish to get this network. I love my late night Pac 12 football. I've been with DirecTV since 1995. They had better pic us up!

The key to the deal is that ESPN will effectively hold the 2nd Tier and 3rd Tier rights so they can put 2nd Tier programming on the SEC Network at will. The SEC certainly won't oppose it as it is in their interest for everyone to desire the SEC Network.
That's the flaw with the LHN. ESPN runs the network and owns the 3rd Tier rights but the 2nd Tier rights are through the Big 12. So if any games or programming that is 2nd Tier goes on the LHN the Big 12 has to buy off and a lot of schools aren't anxious about putting their games on the LHN when it would otherwise be on a channel people actually get. It also doesn't help that it makes that school look like Texas' bitch.
None of that is an issue with the SEC Network. UGA fans don't care if their games are on the SEC Network vs ESPN 2 as long as they get both channels. Make no mistake as well, the reason ESPN has been doing things like "SEC Storied" and focusing so many 30 for 30's on the SEC is so they can have built in programming. A lot of SEC stuff you see on ESPNU will just move to the SEC Network as well as all the coaches shows. People in the SEC footprint will scream for it because they will otherwise miss a ton of SEC programming.
Football season is of course the closer. Most SEC teams will have 3 or more games on the SEC Network. Not only the current PPV games but a lot of games that were 2nd Tier this season.
That's why this thing will make so much money. In a few years the SEC Network may end up with better ratings than ESPN in some SEC states because you won't have to watch a 30 minute Sportscenter for 5 minutes of SEC highlights. Instead you get an hour long SEC specific "Sportscenter" on Saturdays that has full Press Conference highlights for every game and in depth analysis instead of 3 or 4 plays and a 10 second interview. Folks in Missisissippi don't give a damn about what the Green Bay Packers are doing or if Kobe is happy with the new Lakers coach. They want to see Freeze or Mullen talking about the game.
The recruiting shows are also going to be fantastic because they can focus on just the SEC. Folks don't realize just how cool this thing is going to be.

This is the big thing. I don't care what network it's on, as long as I get it. I'm hoping the SEC Network will be big enough to get on pretty much every bar's standard sports package, even out here in the west.
As a fan of a team with a few tier 3 game seasons likely ahead of us, this is really important.

It will be picked up nationally because states outside the footprint will get it for 5 or 10 cents a month, almost free. They make their money on the footprint states.
I also think it could have some opportunity to make revenue off of advertising over time as it could get some decent ratings. Even a lot of Big 12 school fans I know in Texas are interested in seeing it because of the quality of the games and programming.
Personally I hope they hire some guys from Food Network and the Travel Channel to do some shows. I'd love to see a BBQ Pittmasters type guy that goes from one SEC area to another talking food, BBQ, and tailgating. A Travel Channel type show that highlights things to do and showing cool stuff about each school's history and traditions would be interesting. With 14 schools and such a large footprint there is a lot of potential. You could do some fun shows hosted by Southern comedians as well like Larry the Cable Guy or Jeff Foxworthy. Essentially they can make it about more than just the SEC but Southern culture.

My understanding is there will generally be 3 football games per week on this channel. They may flip some of that between the ESPN family and SECtv but there is more than enough inventory that ESPN does not currently show to get to about 3 games per week.
The following will be moved here:
- PPV games
- CSS/FSN
- SEC syndication network (that 11am game)
The last two are subleases ESPN makes that don't expire til after the 2013 season so that was a big key in why the channel won't go live til 2014. I doubt they'd have to do much selling to cable companies when you consider that every SEC school will play at least one football game and they will average around 4-5 games a year on this channel (42 games, 84 teams/14 but many non-conf games). That's not even getting into other sports like baseball which makes the spring season 1000X better than the B1G channel.

There is also a lot of original programming that could come from it.
TigerDroppings Live starring Chicken would be awesome. But with some of the stuff that shows up here I don't know if it would be sports-related or comedy hour.

I'd pay a dollar more if there was a segment on The Girls of The SEC. Make it late at nite. R rated would work best. Or SEC Sorority Girls Gone Wild. Producers could produce fan specific instructionals, as in for bama fans: How To Teabag & Not Get Caught. For Moo St fans: How To Make Better Use of Cowbells. O.Miss fans: How To Turn The Grove Into A Real Tailgate Party.

Excellent point and one I never considered. I guarantee the numbers from those programs are being used as bargaining chips for ESPN with the SEC. They have the numbers of all those reruns. They basically have been doing a test run of the SEC Network over the past year. They know what they'll be getting in returns.
