How would having 5,000 more students on campus tarnish the school's identity?

An important metric for college rankings is student to faculty ratio. Normally growth means bigger classes, not more areas of study, which drops that metric.

Terrible thread is terrible. At least make the effort to compare apples to apples. Some of those numbers reflect system-wide enrollment, while others reflect just one campus.

These threads are always full of stupid meaningless numbers clung to for bragging rights.

ALL SEC schools offer valuable and desirable degrees for 95% of the jobs out there.

It's what you do with it that makes you successful.

Potentially.

But I think this thread is more so a conversation about business models. Alabama is pushing for a huge enrollment. Auburn is not. Texas A&M has a huge enrollment. Mississippi State does not.

The question is which business model is better, if one is indeed better, and is there a chance that one business model is detrimental to the long term value of the school.

Time will tell.

And Tupelo and DeSoto campuses of "Ole Miss", which comprise another 1800 or so students.

What people refer to as "Ole Miss" in Oxford has about 18,500 students. MState is larger, and that apparently bugs Ole Miss enough to obfuscate.

Owner of a very large New Orleans company told me once that all an application with a degree listed on it guaranteed was that the applicant COULD be taught.

In my line of work I get to deal with a lot of folks with a diploma. I often wonder how they could've graduated from college and be so damn dumb.
I suppose the vast majority of things in this industry are learned on the job.

A lot more people are wanting to go to Alabama.

true...because some people choose their school based on dumb shite like football...and Alabama has way more fans (sidewalk and non) in the state of Alabama, popping out even more Alabama fan children who want to go there...often because of football

Only about 40-45% of UA's student body are in-state kids.

A good football team is a good advertisement. Bama has good academics and a nice campus which are not hurting the surge in enrollment.

Alabama is one of the few big state schools that has grown faster than Arkansas has over the past decade.

Is this legit? For the flagship university of a state I think this is very strange. Not a flame, just that is staggering to me

I think our former pres Bowen Loftin referred to the football program as the "front porch" of the university.

IMO, the promotion and marketing campaign UA launched a few yrs ago are finally paying dividends. Increased enrollment, increased revenues, increased course load, increased campus construction & housing.

Some folks would rather not see their OOS student numbers exceed in-state numbers, but I have no problem with it. The student body could use some cultural diversity IMO.

Alabama kids are ok, but the kids from California, New York, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Wisconsin, etc. provide a great student mix and give those home grown AL kids a taste of what it's like outside the South.
