^^^ I still contend that Tennessee was the most physical program outside of Nebraska in the 90s. Must give credit where credit is due. Tennessee played grown man football. Now Tennessee plays autistic third grade girl football.

Teams that made the SEC Championship Game from the SEC West in the 1990s: Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, and Mississippi State.
The funny thing is that LSU would've made the SECCG in 96 and 97 if the results of the Iron Bowl were reversed. Both were 1 point games decided in the final minute.

LSU upsetting Tennessee in 2001 really changed things

Spurrier quit a few weeks after that. Changing of the guard.

Spurriers domination of Tennessee but not other national powers(fsu miami Nebraska) made them feel like a tier below the top tier.
Meh.
They played for a national championship in 1995 and won one outright in 1996 so I wouldn't go that far. However, I will definitely agree that Florida was the weakest among the major FBS powers of the 90s.

West was awful in the 90s.
MSU was the winningest program in the west from I think 96-2000 or 97-2000

Yall had first Crack at spurrier but chose rocky feller so he went to Duke. He probably still finds his way back to Florida but still.

Oh, obviously. Look at what he's done so far.
Glad you're giving credit where credit is due.
Heupel took a 3-7 dumpster fire and went 7-4 his first year, then won 20 games the next two seasons, going 27-12 his first three seasons.
That compares well to Kirby Smart, who didn't have to deal with the dumpster fire and rebuilding a depleted roster top to bottom. He took a solid team who had won ten games a year the previous two seasons and regressed to 8-5 his first year, then went on to go 32-10 his first three seasons.
So, take over a total clusterfrick and go 27-12 vs take over a solid roster and go 32-10?
It's pretty close.
And you saw what he did with Hooker and a shltty defense. Wait till you see what he does with NICO and a decent to good defense.
It won't be long before UT fans will consider 11-2 to be a bad year.

10rc benefited greatly from BAMA being on probation.

Saban’s 2001 LSU team upsetting Tennessee in the SECCG to knock the Vols out of the NC game was the West’s coming out party.

Haven't you heard? We've been 'irrelevant' for 25 years.
So no, UT was NEVER in the SEC title game that year with a trip to the NC game on the line (well, for us, not for LSU).

It's interesting how Spurrier left Florida a few weeks after Saban's first SECCG win. Almost like Spurrier knew that his time was coming to an end.
Not remotely the case why Spurrier left.
Spurrier (at Florida) vs Saban (at LSU)
2000 LSU 9 Florida 41
2001 Florida 44 LSU 15

Saban was lucky as hell that 911 happened and Tennessee was able to pull the upset vs Florida the last game of the season. He did not want to see UF in Atlanta after he got his pants yanked down in Red Stick.
