Saw this in another thread and was caught off guard. Anyone on here trying to make a case that the SEC East wasn't the better division pre-Saban is either too young to remember the 1990s or was gay in the 1990s and/or didn't start following college football until way later. I had no idea that this was even up for discussion prior to now. Apparently i learned something new today.

Florida and Tennessee were both top 5 national programs in the 90s. Auburn was the same kind of schizo that they've always been. LSU was god damn clinically retarded and had their worst decade ever.. Give much credit for 1992 but Alabama eventually turned goofy in the 90s. The SEC East team was ranked in the top 10 pretty much every year in the 90s and half the time the SEC West team was barely ranked.
Damn revisionist historians alwasy revisioning stuff

^^^ Diddly Dawg's "The East was better than the West in the 90s and early 2000s" in the "second best team" thread currently has a 24 percent favorability rating.

Some dork on there who replied with "You mean to say Spurrier was better" has a smoldering 23 upvotes and 0 downvotes. That guy definitely was either gay in the 90s or not born yet because he totally overlooked the fact that Tennessee was a top 5 national program and beat the frigging brake shite out of Alabama from the time Stallings left until the time Saban got there.

There were GUMPtards on that thread saying this very thing. So yeah, 'somebody' told him that.

You're excused.

Yeah i then went on to illuminate this worthy adversary about some simple facts regarding how UT, UF and UGA all owned the west during that time period.

Georgia was sucking hind tit during most of that time and STILL was anally reaming the West most Saturdays, and put up a 3-3 mark against GUMP.

Friggin casual fans are the worst.

Tennessee hasn't won the SEC in football since 1998.

Florida V Tennessee used to be must see tv. Tennessee V Georgia was usually a good show, with the occasional head scratcher outcome, but the better team normally winning.

West v East was cyclical, hard to top Florida during the SOS years, and 2 crystal balls with Urb. Tennessee has 1998, and LSU probably stopped them from playing for another in the SECCG. Tennessee also lost to Franchione in 02 and Shula beat Tennessee and Florida in 05.

Recency bias says the west was best. If you look from 1992 - 2023, and I haven’t checked the records, it’s probably not a grand slam either way. The real grand slams are Nick and SOS.

It's interesting how Spurrier left Florida a few weeks after Saban's first SECCG win. Almost like Spurrier knew that his time was coming to an end.

In the 90's the East was clearly better top-to-bottom. The West had some good teams year-to-year but lacked the depth of the East with Florida, UGA, and Tennessee.

From 2000-2008 it was a push, with LSU, Auburn, and Arkansas all being consistently good from the West and Florida, UGA, and Tennessee all being consistently good from the East.

After 2008 the West has ruled.

I would argue that while the SEC East had the two best programs of the 1990s competing within it (Florida and Tennessee), the SEC West was the deeper division. All six teams from the SEC West finished in the Top 25 multiple times during the decade while only three of the six in the East could boast the same feat.

ETA:

Teams that made the SEC Championship Game from the SEC East in the 1990s: Florida and Tennessee.

Teams that made the SEC Championship Game from the SEC West in the 1990s: Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, and Mississippi State.

Tennessee was a great program in the 90s but the lack of success against divisional rival Florida wrote thier narrative. Spurriers domination of Tennessee but not other national powers(fsu miami Nebraska) made them feel like a tier below the top tier.
