Do you mean the myth, the legend, or the truth?

They are not one and the same.

I thought it was a backdoor way for ole Huey to get the State Legislature to fund a Stadium.

What does this have to do with NCAA violations?

The truth is more complicated than that.

quote:

Former Gov. Huey P. Long played a role in constructing the stadium. Long, who was not a University alumnus but a great advocate of University football, requested money from the state to build the stadium.

When they refused, Long discovered that a large sum of state money had been set aside for new dormitories. He put it to use in constructing the stadium dorms — which happened to be in the shape of a stadium — completing the east side in 1932 and the west in 1935.

Long’s dream of having a place for University football was finished in 1937 with the completion of the north side. The south side of the stadium was later added in 1953.

What not many people know is, that Gov.Long basically raided money that was already set aside for a new dormitory to build both a stadium and a dormitory.

Many people still think that Long fooled the Legislature into funding the stadium by asking for dorm money then building Tiger Stadium instead.

Obviously, the dormitory that was planned would have been a lot nicer than what was the case with the stadium dorms.

I knew someone while I was at LSU that was going to write a story for The Reville and include the original plans for the proposed dorm.

I don't know if she ever found them.
