Ratings are based on the percentage of the population turned in. New Orleans is a larger city
Actually Birmingham is a larger media market than New Orleans. Birmingham's media market also includes the metro areas of Anniston and Tuscaloosa.
As of Neilsen's estimates last week, here are the largest media markets inside the SEC footprint, ranked in total number of TV households:
2,646,370- Dallas (#5)
2,285,730- Atlanta (#9)
2,373,700- Houston (#10)
1,859,820- Tampa (#11)
1,660,020- Miami-Ft. Laud (#16)
1,489,710- Orlando (#19)
1,217,370- St. Louis (31)
990,150- Nashville (#29)
907,320- San Antonio (#32)
899,020- Kansas City (#33)
833,910- Greenville-Spartanburg-Asheville (#37)
745,640- West Palm Beach (#38)
745,640- Austin (#39)
686,080- Birmingham (#45)
665,330- Jacksonville (#47)
653,710- Louisville (#49)
633,140- Memphis (#50)
633,140- New Orleans (#51)
547,650- Little Rock (#57)
528,440- Mobile-Pensacola (#58)
505,430- Ft. Myers-Naples (#61)
503,410- Knoxville (#62)
472,550- Lexington (#63)

Birmingham is the #1 college football market in the US and by a large margin.. Without Alabama football CBS college football ratings would absolutely drop..
B-ham is a very large market.
Even without that market LSU does pretty well in TV ratings. My God, LSU-Syracuse at noon won the weekend earlier this year.

If you take the population and ratings of the top 4 cities to find the total viewership it would be. 1. Birmingham 19,528 2. Atlanta 17,017 3. New Orleans 16,141 4. Knoxville 7,514 That's based off 2010 population numbers. Again FACTS
what the hell are those numbers? I didn't say the ratings were the "percentile" of viewers, I said they were based on percentages, dumbass.
ETA: what is your point anyway? That Birmingham watches football more than anyone else? So what.
Saint Louis watches baseball more than anyone else--I.e. They watch t regardless of of who is playing more so than any other market. That doesn't mean that MLB would cease to exist because St. Louis baseball wasn't around.
Jesus, you Alabama fans are retarded. No one disputes that your state is, in general, filled with the most die hard side walkers. But only Alabama fans would want medal for such an accomplishment.

No. You have to use the DMA numbers for the total number of TV households in each media market.
While Birmingham is the top percentage market for ESPN college football, by a landslide, its still just the #45 market in America in terms of size.
This would be the total number of VIEWERS for the average ESPN game of all of last season:
1. Atlanta- 90,658 households
2. Birmingham- 63,119
3. Tampa- 39,056
4. Phoenix- 38,826
5. Greenville SC- 34,190
6. Orlando- 32,400
7. Charlotte- 29,215
8. Nashville- 28,714
9. Portland- 27,272
10. New Orleans- 26,592
11. Columbus OH- 26,318
12. Raleigh/Dur- 24,892
13. Memphis- 24,173
14. Oklahoma City- 23,836
15. Jacksonville- 23,287
This is based off the numbers provided. While its doubtful that New York came close to a 1.0 rating for CFB games last season on ESPN, if they did, it would be enough to make them the #2 overall market. That market is just that big.

Alabama was the 2:30 game that day, LSU/Fla was a night game..
You don't think the Alabama fans switched over to watch the other games after ours was over do you?
They probably did. But you don't think also works the other way around? You don't think there weren't LSU or Florida fans who watched the CBS game before theirs started?
The CBS 2:30 game is typically the #1 rated game each week. The fact that LSU-UF beat it out on ESPN shows its not all about Bama.
