Schools with ex-coaches involved in their program still?

I look at Dye and how he has stuck around the program. While he is an ambassador of sorts for AU and AU football and no doubt does some PR, I can't help but now wonder "Is this normal?" I mean, what other big time schools can we think of that have an ex-coach SO involved still in the program - so much so that they would be in attendance at the press conference of a new coach like yesterday? Not saying it's necessarily wrong (a lot of what you read about Dye and Lowder cannot be substantiated, so I am trying to think objectively), but just wondering.
Georgia/Dooley? yes, but he was AD.
Florida/Spurrier? No
Alabama/Stallings? Not really
LSU/anyone?
Other big time schools??

Stallings pretty much serves as a consultant for coaching hires but he's not directly involved as he's on the BOT at Texas A&M. He talked to Saban about the Bama job but I'm not sure how much he was involved.

Yeah but Broyles was AD as well - not really the same

Well, he's not anymore but he won't leave.

And one more bit of context...let's not forget that Dye has not coached since 1992. That's over 16 years ago, yet he is still roaming the halls, even though he has never held any position of offical stature since.
Broyles and Dooley were both ADs until this century, so it makes a little more sense to see them around.

Well, even though God needed a football coach, Paul Jr. is still very influential in Tuscaloosa. It's pathetic, really.

You forget, Dye was AD at Auburn the last few years that he was coaching as well. Not that it makes much of a difference, but if you are giving Broyles and Dooley a pass for being AD, you need to factor that in with Dye as well.

Pat Dye is an Auburn man. He loves Auburn, always will, and simply wants the best for Auburn. He was not ready to go when he did and it showed when he left. I for one am very glad to have him around and will always appreciate him for what he did for the program and his continued loyalty and desire to be involved and try to help to the best of his ability.

Not so much giving them a pass....but Housel took over in 94! Dooley and Broyles were around until a couple of years ago.
Not trying to incite a riot - I was in school during Dye's great run. He clearly was key in resurrecting the program to compete with Bama year in and year out after such a long drought.

Paterno still tools around with the PennState football team occasionally.
Lou Tepper/LSU this year

Like Bertman and the lsu baseball team. He became AD just to build a new stadium then resigned and now still talks about baseball all the time.

When you are the school's top donor, you're damn right you're going to be influential...ask T. Boone Pickens. Its not like he's influential JUST BECAUSE he's the son of Bryant...which would be pathetic.

I honestly can't think of another example that fits what Pat Dye does with Auburn. Sure, other schools former coaches make an appearance here and there, but you would never expect them to issue some sort of official letter/press release/email regarding the school's current choice as a head coach.
It would have been like RC Slocum issuing a personal endorsement of Mike Sherman. That would have been weird and awkward.
Even Barry Switzer and Darrel Royal aren't as involved in their schools - and they won National Championships.

I can't hold back anymore....while I appreciate what the man did for us, Dye is ancient! He hasn’t been coach or AD there for 16 years, and he is still roaming the halls and attending press conferences? I think he is a wart, despite all the good he has done. He and Jacobs make us look like the stereotypical good-ol boy network. I do not like the way Jacobs manages our athletic department - he may be a nice guy, but I am fumed.
When he announced at the press conference 2 weeks ago that he started his final meeting with TT with a word of prayer, I lost it. WTF??? How odd is that to say??!! I am not dissing anyone's religion or spirituality, but that is NOT relevant, especially given the speculation around the true story and what REALLY happened. And even now he is still feeding everyone that BS about TT resigning????? AND denying that he spoke with Dye last weekend before offering Chizik???? Holy crap - it is so painful when decisions are made that piss you off yet you have no control over them!!

Another factor to consider is that Dye was at the helm when Auburn was put on probation for players getting money from coaches and boosters as an incentive program for good play. Where else would someone with that albatross be allowed to represent the university in such a high profile manner?

You have a point.

I agree and that pissed me off too. Religion has no place here. It is bad enough that you start a meeting like this out like that, but 10x worse that you announce it.

Total bullshite. Dye had plenty of input here. His picks were Johnson and Chizik. I believe that we did not go through the backchannels and rely on agents or 3rd parties, but I do not really care whether we did or did not. This holier than thou stuff is bullshite. If that is how business is done today, we are at a competitive disadvantage in a hugely important decision and if you are that incompetent that you put yourself in that type of situation, you should not be in a position of power.
