Most of our coaches seem to limit their haunts publicly… Supposedly Bert liked to get hammered and pass out at Eastside Grill (in addition to the feedings). Poor Jen.

You must be a relative of Joe Dean.

That guy was so tight he squeaked when he walked by.

It took Emmert to open up the pocketbook and get serious about the football budget.

I'm not denying any of that.

What I was responding to was:
quote:

[Saban] got LSU football back on track with the LSU administration and higher-ups

I watched as Broadhead took over from Dietzel/Maddox, and then Dean from there. In that context, Broadhead blew up the relationships with the "LSU administration and higher-ups" when he tried to turn the finances around and wrest control from the boosters, then Dean came in and smoothed things over, and actually made improvements.

During Dean's tenure:
TAF was formed
Outdoor practice facility
Lawton/training/S&C
Admin bldg
East Upper

quote:

Don't know how you could forget the big push Saban made for football facilities upgrades at LSU including a nutrition center that is nowadays taken for granted.

I'm not saying he didn't continue the push for improvements, just that he wasn't responsible for getting back on track with the higher ups as much as getting back on track with the fans.

Emmert was the man that made it all happen ca. 2000. He couldn't have done it without all the work put in by Broadhead and Dean. If I'm not mistaken, it was under Dean that the LSU AD started to actually turn a profit.

I'm not an insider, that's just my opinion after having been a student at LSU from 1983 - 1990 and watching what was going on, and then a season ticket holder starting in 2000.

There are various levels of autism. ( not saying Saban is) Being mild on the spectrum can make someone very focused on things that they are interested in.

I coach a 6U football team with my brother. His son is the QB. He is five and has a touch of autism or OCD one. They have never had him tested. He plays QB because he shows insane attention to detail. Every evening that we don’t have practice my brother pulls up film from the previous game and gives him the remote and leaves him alone. He sits in the floor and watches for 45 minutes to an hour. Every day. He literally begs my brother to let him. The kid is as quite as a church mouse, and not super big; but gets on that field and immediately takes over, gets everyone lined up and jumps all over asses if someone doesn’t do something right. Basically a little robot. He has also wrestled two years and won a state championship both years as well.

Bert is sure happy to be at Illinois and winning! he is lucky to get a second chance and it was at Illinois. Perfect fit and closer to his wife family in Iowa.

Show me one person, with an IQ one standard deviation over average, that doesn't show OCD or autism in some form or fashion. I'll wait.

With smart comes "crazy". How much do you want ?

I was a student from 1980-1989 we prolly ran into each other. I worked WPRG/KLSU and was buds with Herb Vincent.

Brodhead was an amazing AD bringing in Arnsparger, Sue Gunter and Skip (I think the track coach and a few others). Pissed me off when he got rid of wrestling and mens gymnastics (we were good in both) but he did it for Title IX and didn’t want to have to add two more womens sports.

Also the BOS back them was much like Auburn’s Regents and screwed shite up. Brodhead put an end to that until… his fight with Arnsparger. The BOS couldn’t wait to side with Arnsparger and dump Brodhead.

Irony is that Arnsparger saw first hand the shite that still was LSU politics and got the hell out of Baton Rouge.

Joe Dean was awful. Besides hiring Curley Hallman, he oversaw the implosion of LSU football under Mike Archer.

In the late 80’s some jackass NOLA naacp shite stirrer was peddling the farce about LSU being racist and how we would never have a white qb. There was absolutely no push back from Archer or Dean. We started losing blue chippers like crazy to the point where LSU was poison in the NOLA black community.

It wasn’t until Dinardo made a concerted effort to bring NOLA back in the fold and Herb Tyler that that fallacy was put to bed.

Dean was also cheap as hell and almost got us stuck with Pat Sullivan instead of Dinardo. His cheapness actually was good in that situation because he refused to buy out Sullivans contract… so he went with Dinardo… another cheap decision. Dinardo wasn’t awful but he was chosen bc he was cheap.

When Emmett came in he saw the train wreck that was Dean and took over the search and got Saban.

BTW Dean was a really bad alcoholic and one night drove his car into that canal by the LSU Ag center next to the lake.

Anyway I can’t link any of the above but that’s pretty much all inside info.

I've heard it all before, but my point was, when it came to bringing the muckety-mucks back on board after Broadhead, it was Dean, not Saban. And while Dean was tight, he did what had to be done to turn around the finances. As I pointed out, it was Emmert that told the BOS that they had to spend money to make money, not Saban.

Saban mostly justified the rationale to open up the purse strings by winning big. Winning plus the facility upgrades started under Dean and continued under Skip, equals better recruiting - which leads to more winning. I don't mean to sell Saban short, I'm just saying he wasn't responsible for getting the boosters and admin to start investing in the facilities. That had already begun.

And say what you will about Dean, his being terrible, tight or drunk (Oh my!), the LSU athletic department came a LONG way under him - and I don't think it was all in spite of him.

If an AD drunk as Cooter Brown drives his car on campus into a canal he is done anywhere else… but at LSU he didn’t wasn’t even ticketed.

He was also btw the reason we stopped playing aTm. Not bc of the ridiculous reason the aggies say but because the SEC expanded with the addition of the pigs and cocks and we went from 7 SEC games to 8, which meant we lost a home game every other year. This cost so something had to give and that was the Aggie series. The pigs replaced the aggies.

But agree to disagree.

I think you misunderstand me, I'm not making a value judgement on Dean, I haven't disagreed with anything you've said. I'm merely pointing out facts that refute Saban being responsible for getting "LSU football back on track with the LSU administration and higher-ups." If anyone in 2000 alone, it would be Emmert. In the historical context, you have to acknowledge what happened under Dean coming after Broadhead.

I am judging neither Dean nor Saban negatively.

To make it worse, it's fat-free honey Dijon dressing. I tried this several years ago, thinking I would become a champion like Saban. It got old really fast and I quit after a month.

He sounds autistic but that autistic fricker can coach.
Coach is OCD to the extreme about time management, he wants to waste as little time as possible on trivial BS. He eats the same thing every day because it’s regimented and requires zero thought or planning.

He calls in specialists during the year, sends the plane down to get them. Film, notes, etc are already on the plane waiting for the specialist along with a plate lunch and a sack of fruit, snacks and water. That way when the guy gets to the complex, he’s ready to work. Waste no time on trivial BS.
