See, I have one major quibble with 2011 Alabama defense that prevents me from ranking it as the clear GOAT. They did not do a good job forcing turnovers. They forced a measly 20 turnovers which was only 77th in the country. All of the other great defenses, the ones that really dominated teams forced a ton of turnovers. 2004 USC forced 40 turnovers (#1 in the country), 2008 Florida forced 35 turnovers (#3 in the country), 2003 LSU forced 33 turnovers (#9), 2009 Alabama 31 turnovers (#10), 2001 Miami 45 turnovers (#1), and 1992 Alabama forced 37 turnovers (#1). But anyway, I have no idea why this thread is still going. Bama clearly had better defenses by every statistical measure and they did it against better competition as well.
