Running Backs Drafted #1 overall since 1965, a history of failure

There have been 8 running backs drafted #1 overall in the NFL since 1965. One would assume that taking a player in this position would equal a sure fire hit, but instead, NFL GMs have been burned so badly that the running back position itself has been devalued over time. There are 4 sure fire busts at this pick, 3 who would probably be considered successes and 1 borderline player.
Here are the picks in order of production from most to least productive in rushing statistics:
OJ Simpson, USC, 11,236 yds, 61 TD
Earl Campbell, Texas, 9,407 yds, 74 TD
George Rogers, South Carolina, 7,176 yds, 54 TD
Billy Sims, Oklahoma, 5,106 yds, 42 TD
Bust Line comparison player, Darren McFadden who is widely considered an NFL bust at this point in his career:
Darren McFadden, Arkansas, 4,247 yds, 25 TD
Ricky Bell, South Carolina, 3,063 yds, 16 TD
Bo Jackson, Auburn, 2,782 yds, 16 TD
Tucker Frederickson, Auburn, 2,209 yds, 9 TD
Ki-Jana Carter, Penn State, 1,144 yds, 20 TD

Hard to believe Jim Brown was a #6 pick

Bo Jackson averaged for his NFL career what McFadden had for his best season. /thread

The only thing busted about Bo was his hip.
Damn shame too. He was special and fun to watch.

You mean over 1,000 yards?
Wait, Bo Jackson didn't do that?
My bad

I just tossed in DMac because everyone regards him as a bust.
That should be a convenient line. If you didn't even perform as well as DMac, you were a bust.
Why didn't they perform? Well, Reasons.
Ricky Bell died of a rare disease.
Bo Jackson had injuries
No idea on Frederickson, he played several years and actually had some OK receiving stats.
Ki-Jana Carter had injuries.
Hell, McFadden was slowed significantly by injuries. You can make up excuses but the numbers show whether they were a bust or not.

Do you even grammar bro?
Edit: and how does this have ANYTHING to do with "Arky" being "special?"
I guess calling one of the best players in your school's history an NFL bust is actually a compliment?

Bo Jackson averaged a 1st down every 2 carries. McFadden averaged a 3rd down every two carries. #bustdealwithit

Bo Jackson was far from a bust. Had he not been injured he may been the greatest of all time. Bo was a badass!

Not that it matters but, its difficult to call Bo Jackson a bust. He had an injury shortened career, yes. But he was still a man amongst boys when he was out there. Save Ricky Bell, the other cats, injuries or not, were never going to be all-time greats, though McFadden certainly had all the physical tools.

No one really considers Bo a bust but you already knew that...

Man among boys is particularly apt for Bo Jackson considering he was a 20 year old freshman

Bo Jackson is widely regarded as one of the greatest of all time.
It's all based on how he looked though. There are zero statistical measurements to actually put him in that category.
Based on numbers he was a bust.
Why is Herschel Walker, who had MUCH better NFL numbers than Bo Jackson, considered a bust, yet Bo Jackson is considered so great. Why do the injuries only matter for Bo and not for anybody else? Almost every single perception of Bo Jackson in both football and baseball is not reflected in actual numbers.
