It was my impression you can't advance a muffed punt. How was Florida able to score the touchdown on that play? Obviously, they didn't advance it, per se, they recovered it in the end zone, but I thought such a recovery was still brought back to the spot of the muff. What is the appropriate rule in this case?*

The Play in Question

*I'm not saying it would have mattered, I'm purely interested in the rule.

I think you already nailed it.

You can't advance it, you get it where you recover it, it just so happened the recovery was in the end zone

I was wondering myself. I understood the rule the same way you do.

ETA: After a little reading, I believe you are correct. You cannot pick it up and run with it, you just get it where you recover possession.

So, if Georgia would have recovered that ball after the Florida players "pushed it" into the end zone, what would the call have been?

What is the reason for not being able to advance a muffed punt? I hate that rule.

It is a distinction drawn because it isn't fumbled. It allows for a more equitable result on an accidental touch by the receiving team with their back to the ball. Tries to take some of the flukiness out of that situation without giving immunity to the receiving team. It has been around as a rule since before even the fair catch. A relic at this point.

Same reason you can't advance an onside kick, the return team never actually has possession.

I'd imagine it has something to do with the idea that a muffed punt/kick is not treated as a fumble. The thought process is that you cannot fumble something you never possessed in the first place.

We took a vote to omit outdoor because the qualifier wasn't needed. Quit hijacking the thread because you don't bother to read about these developments.

What if they pushed it out of the back of the endzone. Then it would be a touchback, right? If the Georgia guy never had possession of the punt then I would think touchback

These are all great questions. I'm just not sure how it all works. For years, I thought the ball was returned to the spot of the muff. It is why the officials throw the bean bag or hat at that spot in terms of their mechanics.

Muffs cause all kinds of crazy scenarios. Imagine if the Georgia guy calls for fair catch, it hits off his helmet and goes into the air. If the Florida players hit him while the ball is in the air, that is a kick catch interference penalty. Isn't that crazy?

Yes, that would be a touchback.

isn't there a difference bettween a muffed and fumbled punt? as in a muff would be it hit him in the leg or he called fair catch a dropped it, but a fumble is if he actually attempted to field it. can't remember if he called fair catch or not.
