Concrete holds up way better to freeze/thaw cycles and de-icers.
Why are runways concrete if they are so rough and need to be repaired more often?

the mexican bit is grandiose hyperbole but I cant argue our roads are shite. I remember 20 years ago they got significantly rougher when you crossed into Ms. that's not even the case any longer. thanks to decades of assholes like robert bentley. roll tide

The initial cost of concrete is why asphalt is used, but long term? Asphalt is more costly because of the maintenance.

I'll still take asphalt over concrete roads everyday. Even though concrete is more durable and cheaper in the long term. It's a pain in the arse to drive on.

ASR is a massive problem with concrete. The pavement structure will fail quickly.

That's not always true. But I will say the amount of truck traffic impacts that choice as much as anything.

our interstate system is 50 years old and it is wearing out. Trying to fix those things with all the traffic on them is also a night mare. There is no easy solution. If there was enough right of way I would rather see an entire new road be built next to the current one. This way you have a new product and it does not disrupt the current traffic flow. This would probbly be too costly. I have made 3 trips in the last 2 years west on either 10 or 20 heading to Tx from Alabama. There is construction going on constantly. Around Red Stick is horrible.

I assume you are coming 10 and turned north in Slidell but that stretch of 20/59 from Meridian to B'ham, you'll be lucky to keep a car on the road there. Its literally all patchwork and like driving on gravel
Thankfully, they're in the process of repaving most of it between Tuscaloosa and the Tombigbee. The section in Sumter County is in pretty decent shape.

I work in the construction materials industry so both keep me employed. Concrete is king though.

Absolutely this. Alabama has the absolute worst roads of any Southern State. For example, drive from Mobile to Memphis. In Alabama, highway 45 is single lane and goes through several shithole small towns where you have to get around the dumbass redneck locals and stop at 3 or 4 stop lights in each town. When you cross the state line into MS it turns into 4-lane, they bypassed all the small shite towns and there may be 2 or 3 stop lights all the way through the state. In Alabama if it's not an interstate, it is a shitty road. Gump and Barn land is poor. The state of Alabama is broke or still damn close to it.

Why aren't you picking up Hwy 78, future I-22? It's brand new in Alabama. Recent enough in Mississippi. It's Tennessee that's behind on it finally being designated.
You're also moving the goal post for this argument. Most of the Hwy 45 route is in Mississippi. That's not a major corridor for Alabama, relative to traveling to Memphis.
