Based upon Barnes teams historically, I think he isn't stretching too far by saying your team will be in the tournament every year. The guy has made it more times than not.

I'm pretty sure Pearl made the tournament every single year he was at Tennessee. No reason Barnes can't do it sans maybe next season while he sorts the roster out.

We need more consistent teams when it comes to getting into the tournament. Other programs should take note.

It has absolutely nothing to do with his abilities. Like I said I think it'd be dumb if cal said it too.

I just don't see any real reason to speak in absolutes like that. He could have gotten his point across just as well without saying "will definitely".

Pretty much this. I think a lot of posters are commenting on his statement without realizing how damned good his record is. For once, we didn't hire on the cheap.

He will make a Tennessee a perennial 7-12 seed in the NCAA tournament. Some years they will be better, some years they won't. That's solid. I think his floor is high and his ceiling is low.

So he just promised TN will be in the top 4 to 6 in the SEC every year. Totally realistic.

If Jerry Green and Bruce Pearl can both make it to the tourney 100% of the time, no reason Rick Barnes can't.

I mean his record shows that he's got a 95% chance of coaching his teams to the NCAA every year.

Not with that talent and losing Richardson
But yeah once he gets some players in there he should be ok

Only problem that is hurting Tenn in football and hoops is the talent in Tenn is not on par and they will have to go out of state. Can Barnes do that and recruit that way, he had whoever he wanted in Texas most of the time

If he can get some transfers in, they won't be awful.

SEC is tougher than Big 12.

Given our conference's overall struggles getting into the tournament and gaining national respectability beyond UK, I think that's more than solid and it's definitely the kind of foundation you can keep building upon. The resources, fanbase, and proximity to several recruiting pools are in place to support a consistently good men's program at UT and it's been a shame that bad hires and the bad choices by hires who could've done well here have prevented a more consistent and less up and down program from being built.

As for his ceiling, I think there's a chance it's a bit higher than it was by virtue of what happened at Texas for a few reasons. One is that it's hard to not become complacent when you're at a school for as long as he was but another reason is that I think how it all went down with their AD has put a chip on his shoulder. He's got more to prove now and if that attitude remains he can go higher than predicted by many. If that feeling wears off though as he settles in here then I expect the ceiling to be very much in line with your predictions.

Regardless, if the worst problem we have is going to the tournament every year and only getting to the Elite 8 or Sweet 16 then we've made a great hire, especially given all our program has been through recently.

I got a couple of questions:
1. Who is Rick Barnes?
2. The Vols have a mens basketball team?
