There was plenty.

I didn't think he was a terrible hire. It was a high risk/high reward hire though, largely because of the recruiting aspect (and the rules around it) vs. NBA style team management. I still want to see how well he recruits before I say it's a slam dunk, but the coaching end of its he done well (I didn't really question that though).

Why would anyone consider Avery a bad hire?

LOL! Here is your post from Pimp's link. I think you're having revisionist history.

He's never coached college and he obviously had issues on the pro level. I just feel like Bama could get someone better suited for the college game and building something at Bama.

With that being said AJ is still not a slam dunk hire. Recruiting will make or break him. Good coaches and walk in and win with other people's players. Long term coaches can recruit their own players in and coach them

Dude, they were picked 13th in the SEC because of the shite Grant left him. They also have a dynamite class coming in including a top 10 player from Texas and two transfers (one of them highly regarded) that are eligible next year. He broke the "doesn't know how to recruit" myth before his first season ever began.

I thought it was a home run hire from the get-go, but I don't think anyone realistically expected us to be firmly on the bubble at this point in the season.

Yea, I never knew why anyone ever doubted if he could recruit. He was an NBA coach of the year, former NBA champion as a player, and has an infectious personality. It's not hard to sell that to kids.

And even if they didn't know Avery from the Spurs or as an NBA coach, they know who he is from ESPN. Most kids are NBA fans before College Bball fans. Everyone who he meets knows who he is, and thats a priceless recruiting tool. Besides, how many college coaches can show a recruit his NBA title ring?

Avery Johnson is much beloved by everyone in New Orleans, The NBA, and including Sean Payton with the New Orleans Saints, when he brought Avery Johnson in to do a rally before the playoffs and Super Bowl win.
Great hire by Alabama to bring in this outstanding coach and communicator.
He could well be the next great college basketball coach.

Thanks for revisiting my Gumptastic post! It was a lot of naysayers in there. Honestly... This is exactly what I expected. The guy is one of the best coaches I've ever seen. The recruiting was a no brainer. The marketing of the team to the community was much needed. He's far surpassed any normal fans expectations. He's living up to mine. Believe me when I say that this is Saban 2007... next year Bama will begin to be a perennial top 25 team.
