We also (unofficially) retired Reggie Ball's number too...

ATHENS -- Georgia officials announced late Saturday night that the school intends to add a fifth jersey to the legendary circle of retired football numbers. Alongside Herschel Walker, Theron Sapp, Frank Sinkwich and Charlie Trippi, the Dawgs will retire Georgia Tech Senior Reggie Ball's #1 jersey.
"The guy did so much for our program," said Damon Evans, director of athletics at The University of Georgia. "It's the only fair and proper way to recognize his contributions."
Reggie Ball's career at Georgia Tech will soon end with a 0-4 mark against the Dawgs. He found new and amazing ways to lose games for the Yellow Jackets each year including classics such as losing track of downs and multiple last minute game ending interceptions.

Those numbers are not retired, just the players jersey's. Yes, it would be absurd for us to retire that many.

what does this even mean? Like the physical jersey they wore on their back is not used anymore...but that happens everywhere. Do you mean there's just a copy of it in teh stadium similar to hanging a jersey from the rafters?
I'm struggling to comprehend how (ie) "former player, #1" can be retired but people can still wear #1.

I will never forget him throwing the ball OOB on 4th down. Pure genius.

There is an old story (that may or may not be true) about why Alabama has never retired any numbers. Apparently Coach Bryant intended on retiring Lee Roy Jordan's number. For those that don't know him he was a bad arse LB in his time. Coach Bryant once said "if they stay between the sidelines, Lee Roy will get em." Or something to that effect. So the next season the first fall practice some walk on trots out onto her field with Lee Roy's jersey. Coach Bryant stops the kid and braces him. The kid responds by basically saying to the effect of "they handed me this one." Coach thinks twice about it and let's him go on to practice. So that kinda set the precedent as to why Alabama never retired jersey numbers. (Who the hell knows about some of the old stories. I heard a few different versions of so many of them it's pretty hard to discern the truth.)

so then the jersey isn't retired.
The number isn't, but the jersey which bears the players name on the back is.

What criteria does Kentucky use when deciding to retire a number?

I cant stand the idea of retiring jersey numbers, especially at the college level.
Good on Alabama for not doing it.
That makes more sense and how it should be. The number should not be retired.
