We haven't used #21 since 1997.

#21 Keffer McGee

38 is also retired but recently the winner of the Chucky Mullens courage award gets to wear it.

Mizzou does something similar with 25 - Aaron O'Neal. He collapsed and died at practice about 10 years ago.

I don't think you know what those quotation marks mean.

In Tennessee's case, it takes an act of congress to get your number retired. We seriously have the most insane process ever.

Oh and Shaft some of those numbers are 'retired.' For example, AJ got Johnny Majors blessing to wear #45. That said, I'm sure you mean jersey not number.

If Alabama retired numbers, we would be using triple digit numbers today. Which, after scouring the NCAA rulebook, I couldn't find a rule against.

Most of ours are actually former players who died serving in WWII. We didn't play foosball during war.

I would say other LSU revered would be:
4 - Charles Alexander
7 - Bert Jones, HoneyB, PP
13 - Tommy Hodson
18 - several
21- Dalton Hilliard
25 - Josh Reed
80 - Andy Hamilton
84 - Eric Martin

I'll bite,

Auburn is waiting on a player worth the money to wear #2

I remember checking our numerical roster before last season and being surprised that someone was listed with #21, can't remember who it was and if they ever wore it in game.

I would also put #36 in the "revered" category for us.

ETA: Nick Gibson wears #21, RS last year, he wore it in practice, we'll see if he wears it on the field this year

I find it bizarre that Kentucky football seems to have more retired numbers than the rest of the SEC combined.

LSU TIGERS
Retired:
37- Tommy Casanova

Really?

That must have been fairly recent. I have never heard about it until now, and am almost certain I've seen a number 37 within the past 5 or 10 years at least.

Any list of "revered" for LSU would have to include #3, Kevin Faulk. Also, if Andy Hamilton and Eric Martin make the list, it's hard to keep Wendell Davis (#82) off of it. Also, maybe it's too soon, but OBJ (3, but also wore 33 one year maybe?) has to be on there, too.

The reason is that no one can find the #2. It is thought that the last person to wear that number borrowed both home and away and refused to give them back.

SOUTH CAROLINA GAMECOCKS
Retired:
2- Sterling Sharpe
37- Steve Wadiak
38- George Rogers
56- Mike Johnson

Sharpe, The Caddy and Boo Juice ... most every alumni knows about those three, but Mike Johnson - I remember when he died and it was sad and tragic. He was from Tennessee, a good guy and dominating center, big guy for his day, like 6-4 260 and he started on the varsity squad as a soph, which was very rare in those days because most sophs were still on the JV teams ... but cancer ate him up and by the time he died he was nothing but skin and bone. He fought it hard though, took a long time for him to die.

it was fairly recent, 2009.

Last player to wear it was Karnell Hatcher. He was wearing it when it was retired and continued to wear 37 until he left in 2011

Little known fact...around 1974, Bryant unilaterally retired 22 and 54, stating that any player getting those numbers would have to live up to the standards set by Johnny Musso and Lee Roy Jordan. Randy Billingsly was already 22 and Bryant switched him to 26. Mike Dubose was 54 and changed to 57.

a lot of schools "honor" a number and don't retire it (prevent someone else from wearing it). I know Tennessee does this.
