Freaking South Carolina

We have the team and ability to do something special only to lose games to teams we shouldn't lose to

this is one of the biggest myths perpetuated on the rant. Teams progress and regress throughout the season. Ranking at the time of the game matters.

Who is this supposed to convince? Every season there are teams that are ranked too high in the preseason. Rankings at the time of the game aren't that relevant. Did Alabama regress after losing to South Carolina in 2010? Did 2012 Arkansas regress after losing to Louisiana Monroe? Did 2012 USC regress after losing to Stanford? There are teams that are perennially overrated due to being a "big name" school or coming off of a great season. 2011 Auburn was ranked #15 after defeating South Carolina. Then look at what happened. That wasn't a case of Auburn regressing. South Carolina just lost a game they shouldn't.

Furthermore, strength of conference or schedule doesn't always factor evenly into the rankings. Most ACC or Big 10 losses should be penalized heavier in the rankings than an SEC loss.

Who did 2012 Notre Dame play prior to the title game? Stanford is the answer. That's it. They were ranked #1 at the time of the title game; any educated, realistic fan knew that they weren't close to being the best team in the country.

Too much stock can't be put into rankings at the time of the game.

Seriously SC, Y'all really need to take advantage of these opportunities.

Oh, you mean when we lost to the #2 ranked team on the road? Oh, and we still won the conference?

That season right?

fyi, you're wrong. you can't deny that teams change throughout the season. rankings change to reflect that.

a team being overrated is subjective. I realize there are lists that show teams' deltas from the beginning of the season but, that doesn't show anything. teams lose players, gain players, get better, get worse, have good or bad chemistry, etc.

auburn was better that day. they deserved their ranking. the ranking changed afterward to reflect the change in the teams. you're making this harder than it really is.

not sure how that's relevant. in regards to intraconference rankings, voters are pretty much never wrong. interconference rankings are much more subjective but, also irrelevant to the discussion.

actually that's a pretty good point. clemtech is usually not deserving of a ranking.

That season right?

Alabama lost by a field goal to the #1 ranked team the first week of November. If LSU was an OOC game, then Alabama would have won the conference too.

The situations are comparable whether you'd like to admit it or not.

Thank you. South Carolina and Georgia aren't responsible for those programs underachieving. Clemson isn't "down", but they aren't a national power either. Congratulations on being the better program 5 years straight. Here's to another 5.

Surprise, surprise the Vols have played 13 top 10 teams the past 3 years with the next closest being Auburn at 11. Everyone else with 10 or fewer.

Also most games against top 25 teams.

Print the shirts.

But cudos to UT for their scheduling. Past three years you've had Bama and SCAR on your schedule, that's six of the 13, almost 50% right there. Who were the other 7 games? One was Mizzou last year, so 6 more? UGA one, or was it two of those years? 4 or 5 more.
