Did LSU hire in-house when Skip stepped down? I honestly don't know.

Smoke Laval was a former long time assistant coach under Skip, but he was at the time of his hiring the head coach at UL-Monroe.

Worst kept seceret that this was going to happen. I have full faith that Holbrook can keep the program going. Though we might need to hire a top assistant as im not sure Sammy Espisito can replace Holbrook's role well enough.

I understand SC fan's optimism, but this is exactly how we felt when Skip stepped down in 2001. Just sayin...

I don't like Tanner as AD that much, but am fine with Holbrook taking over. Weird situation, sort of bittersweet, because we all knew Tanner wanted it badly.

Skip brought Laval back from ULM his last season in 2001 to get reacquainted with the program (I'm keeping the camp money and my Easton contract)

Turtle the recruiting coord stayed on as well

Wells from Bama and Bianco turned down the offer

Timing was the big thing here, most people close to the baseball program and univeristy knew Tanner was only going to coach a few more seasons. Tanner has long stated a desire to be an AD.This way we also keep Holbrook around instead of him leaving and going to a place like UGA when the finally get rid of Perno.

Tanner was one of the great college baseball coaches & his retirement cann't do anything but hurt the program to some extent. How long as that assistant been there? What is the knock on him as an AD?

Holbrook has been there since 09. Before that he was at UNC. He's been to 6 CWS as a coach in the last 7 years between his stints at UNC and USC.

When you've been to three straight CWS finals and won two of them, you kind of have to go down. Tanner only had a few seasons left anyways, and Holbrook has done almost as much for this program as Tanner has. Most people don't realize just how important Holbrook has been.

It was a good time for all of this to happen, and while I feel uneasy about it all, we will be fine after a couple years. If it even takes that long.

Baseball program won't miss a beat, IMO. Laval has been groomed by Bertman, and is the recruiting mastermind behind our talent overload.

this exact quote has been said before.

Again, whether Tanner is head coach or not, SC can't go up much higher. I don't think anyone expected to us to go to a 4th CWS finals or even make it to Omaha with Tanner at the helm, it's not any different with Holbrook there.

What's interesting is that during the 5 years of the Smoke Laval regime, LSU had the best conference winning percentage of all SEC teams. Smoke went 88-60-1 in the SEC, won a SEC Title and went to 2 CWS.

But.............. that was not good enough. Not for LSU and certainly not good enough for a coach replacing a living legend.

Sure, South Carolina will continue to be successful, but you will find that whatever level of success that Tanner's replacement has, it will never be good enough.

It never is. Just ask any avid Bama fan what they thought of Ray Perkins and Bill Curry while they were coaching Bama in the 80's.
