You know the one!
I think it just turned into a pissing contest with UGA because of that guy's Big-6 ideas. Auburn could be anywhere between 12-20 depending on what you use and I think most of are ok with that.

Actually that has us top 20 when I would say we are around 20-21.

Great OP OP!

This was a well thought out and backed up by solid statistics thread.

We usually trade broadsides but well done.

Like, people may not agree with 100% of the inputs, but it always amazes me on threads like this that people are PISSED and downvote.

It's at the very least interesting, even if you don't agree on all the metrics.

Rant is dumb. This is good.

That's your opinion. But there is data in the formula that dates back to Game #1 of the sport in 1869. So the moniker "All-Time" does apply despite what you say. I would say the vast majority of fans would agree that putting more weight on recent success than say success in the 1800s makes sense.

quote:

I mean....Notre dame is one of the top 2-3 all time, probably, but haven't done a whole heck of a lot in the last 20 years or so.

It's been more than just "the last 20 years or so". We're getting close to Year 30 without a National Title for the Irish. And if they fail to win one in the next two seasons, Notre Dame will only lay claim to one single National Title in a generation.

Much like Tennessee... you can't live off the '40s forever. If you don't continue to produce, you're going to start dropping. During the last 40 years, Notre Dame ranks just #14 in the AP. Forty years is no small time period. They also rank just 16th in wins and 17th in Win Percentage..... Sorry but when you have those results over a 40-year period, it has an effect.

quote:

I certainly wouldn't rank Florida above Notre Dame based on Florida' recent success.

Neither did my rankings. Notre Dame came in #6 all-time while Florida acame in at #12. If we were just looking at the last 40 years, any sane person would say Florida has been the better program. Notre Dame is getting quite a bit of credit in these rankings for their ancient success... hence their #6 ranking.

And also hence why its called an "All-Time" ranking.

Yes, but it adds value to a brand.

How much value does Barry Sanders and his Heisman trophy add to Oklahoma State as a program? Would anyone remember anything about Oklahoma State football prior to T. Boone Pickens if it were not for Barry Sanders? He put that program on the map and it's a huge boost to their program resume.

Anyone who remembers the old days often thinks of a program based off its famous players who won the Heisman Trophy.

What does Andre Ware mean to Houston?
What does Ty Detmer mean to BYU?
What does Doug Flutie mean to Boston College?
What does Tony Dorsett mean to Pitt?
What does Roger Staubach mean to Navy?

Those players brought a giant boost to those schools' brands. Heisman Trophies can have a pretty big impact.

It happens. You have to take the decent threads where you can get them.

Er... change that to me challenging you to a fight behind the local Sonic.

Because that is the timeframe needed to include UGA's golden era.

No one is clamoring for Georgia to be ranked in the Top 2 or 3 like another poster was doing. I didn't say Notre Dame was a horrible program. I just said they haven't had nearly a good enough past 40 years to keep their Top 2 or 3 program status.

I have Georgia as the #11 program of the past 40 years.... compared to Notre Dame at #13. They are very close, yet when you factor all the ancient history into the equation, Notre Dame is on a whole different level.

No, because technically 40 years = a generation.

If I had 100x the free time I do now, I'd incrementally weight every year going backwards to a certain point. A National Title in 2010 would weight more than one in 2000... which would weight more than one in 1990... which would weight more than one in 1980, etc. But that would take an impossible amount of time.

If I had really wanted to inflate Georgia's score, I would have made just the last 15 seasons count double instead of the last 40. In the last 15 years, Georgia is 8th in the AP and 5th in wins. All the credit Georgia gets for counting 1980 as recent success is squandered by also counting the Ray Goff years.

The AP is about to rank the all-time college football teams based on AP rankings only.

quote:

AP to publish first all-time college football ranking

The all-time ranking will be released on Aug. 2. They will be based on total poll appearances, number of times ranked No. 1 and AP national championships.

Bama will probably lead in the AP national championships, but OU and OSU will probably lead in the # of times ranked #1 and total poll appearances. Th

Not being a total homer, but back in the early days of the poll, there was a bias against Southern teams.

Pete Fiutak last year also ranked the greatest teams of all time according to the AP ranking.

quote:

Since the AP poll is the only consistent ranking system from 1936 through today, we came up with a scoring system to compare and contrast how the programs finished over the decades. Every time a team finished No. 1 in the final poll, it got 25 points. The No. 2 team got 24 points, No. 3 got 23 points, and so on with the No. 25 team getting one point. Through the decades, the AP ranked the top ten teams for a few years before going back to the top 20 rankings, and eventually, it went to the top 25 system it's at now.
