Damn, Arky #1 offense and top 5 defense should = championship, don't ya think? Of course you do.
Dude I pick us to win every game, every year. Hell if you ain't pickin' your team why are they your team?
The only thing that would keep me from picking us to win it all would be if we got Les Miles for a coach.

LSU lost Peterson, Sheppard and Nevis. Why does everybody assume their defense is not going to miss a beat from last year?
Yeah, because teams never graduate/lose players and improve....

We lose Nevis but we get Sam back.
We lose pp7, but we also lose hatcher (moved to olb). Taylor was hurt the last part of the season which hurt us as Reid and Loston blew some assignments, but gained good experience.
Simon has looked great. We are weak at lb though. I think our secondary is so strong that the blitzes will be crazy this year. If our dl can get a good pass rush without blitzing we are gonna be scary good.
I think bama will have a more solid d but lsu will create more turnovers.
I was impressed with the hogs being so physical on d next year. They might find themselves in tough positions with a new qb possibly turning the ball over and not converting on tough third downs like mallett did. Field position is huge and their d was spoiled last year.
Same thing for auburn. Their offense scored so fast last year they didn't have time to rest. With dyed pounding it out and more depth surely they'll be better.
Hopefully diaz leaving hurts state cuz they were real tough last year.
I see
Bama
Lsu
Florida
State
Usc
Hogs

I think you give a pretty balanced opinion. It will hurt a little losing Shep and Nevis, but they are definitely replaceable. PP7 is a rare talent and his impact will be missed a LOT in the secondary...three guys won't basically be allowed to cover half the field while he locks down his half.
As far as getting a good pass rush with just the DL, well, that is true for just about every team. But I see what you are saying with your secondary and then letting your LBs roam a bit more.
I disagree with the Hogs assessment a bit. I don't think the D was as spoiled as you think. Hopefully we won't have to play so close to the edge as we did last year. We played a very dangerous risk/reward style especially as the year went on...basically putting all of our eggs in the pass rush basket. I DO think that our line will be much improved, finally having a few solid DTs who can all generate a rush up the middle. I also think our offensive strategy will go a bit more towards the rush and we should cut a series or two off of every game...giving our D more of a break than last year.
Most of our rush the last few years has been speed on the edge, but we SHOULD be able to disrupt the pocket up the middle this year with DD Jones, Byran Jones, and the new guy of Robert Thomas who was just an unstoppable bull in the spring (going against the part of our Oline which is a known quantity). A lot of the pass rush we generated off the edge in spring can be chalked up to in-experience at the tackle position and experienced DEs...hopefully that gets cleared up before Bama or none of the semantics will matter.
I think our defense has the potential to be the 3/4th best in the conference...but also the scary potential to be no better than last year (scary because the offense won't be quite as explosive).
I see it as:
Bama
LSU
Florida
Ark/USC
State (depending on Diaz and the LB troubles)
UGA (if they finally play to their talent level they could be a LOT better)
the rest

I'm anxious to see what happens in Lexington with Rick Minter as Co-DC. I like some of the schemes he's throwing at them to mix it up, with a 4-2-5 alignment. We've had some talent on defense (granted not #1 in the SEC talent, but well enough) the past couple seasons that we could've won some more games with something less predictable than what we've run under Brown.

LSU's secondary is the least of their concerns.

Im not a Miles fan but,you can't argue the guys record. He's a winner.Im looking forward to seeing LSU's defense against Arky's offense this year.
