Rank the SEC Coaches on job performance this year

1. Nick Saban - Flat out best coach in college football.
2. Gary Pinkel - Missouri has looked surprisingly good this season.
3. Gus Malzahn - inherited a mess from Gene Chizik and has quickly gotten things rolling.
4. Kevin Sumlin - Done a pretty good job given the distractions and lack of experience defensively.
5. Hugh Freeze - Freeze has significantly raised the standard at Ole Miss.
6. Les Miles - LSU has been good, but they've not lived up to expectations, a recurring theme for Miles.
7. Steve Spurrier - They've not lived up to expectations.
8. Mark Richt - The guy just can't get the right pieces in place at the right time.
9. Butch Jones - Tennessee is showing marked improvement every week, and I expect his stock to rise.
10. James Franklin - They're still Vanderbilt, but Franklin was expected to match last season's performance at least.
11. Will Muschamp - Is Ron Zook back?
12. Dan Mullen - MSU looks pretty bad. That's all you can say.
13. Mark Stoops - It's hard to tell how much of UK's mess falls on Stoops, and he deserves a lot of time, but you can't say the coaching's been great either. He's gotta fall somewhere, so it's at 13.
14. Bret Bielema - Arkansas didn't look bad at all earlier this season. They played with heart in losses to two good teams in Rutgers and TAMU. However, instead of looking better and improving, they look much worse every week.

I'm going to get laughed off the rant for this, but I think Bielema is building a foundation at Arkansas. I don't judge them so much on wins and losses at this point. They were just outmatched this weekend; let's see if they play hard for him next week.
(When I say "building a foundation", I mean a solid program, not an elite program.)

not saying he's done a great job. i can never say someone has done a great job when they lose to ole miss. but, what were the expectations of LSU this year? they were picked 3rd in the west preseason and were ranked exactly where they sit now.

I don't disagree that we should be at 13 at this point. Joker left our program in such a state of disrepair that most of our playmakers this season are true freshmen and JUCO transfers though.
That, coupled with a new offense and a new defense, and it's gonna be ugly.
With the class that we have coming in next season, we should see pretty good progress.

Burt is doing what he can with what he's got. You could reincarnate Tom Landry and our season would look about the same. Tough times indeed.

Did Gus really inherit a mess? Or did he just inherit one talented team that had a coach not utilizing that talent?
Auburn talent isn't where it has been in the past but it wasn't like Gus had a total rebuild.

8 straight games for Arky without a bye week. Lost their last 3 pretty badly. Auburn game is big for Bert. Will they start going forward and stop the bleeding or keep going backwards?

Miles isn't to really blame for the losses this year...what can you do when juniors leave early fopr the pros and your defense is gutted? Hard to recruit for that... but every top tier coach knows that if players are good (or think they are) then you only have four years usually unless they are qbs...which always need four years in most cases before being draft ready.
Muschamp has had a ton of injuries and so have other coaches...but with Richt I see a program where the defense was only so so yet so many were drafted? That's DC coaching.
Don't think you can rate coaches simply by won/lost record...Muschamp had a BCS team last year. The Ole Ball Coach has had a few disappointments...but he has taken USC to new heights and is a hall of famer. AU, UK, Arkie & UT all have new coaches and I think they will need two more years at least before we can see what progress.
I felt before the season started that Jones at UT was going to be successful if given time because of the recruiting work he has put in. UT has not gotten marquee players...yet, but they will be getting visits and looks from some of the better recruits.
Ole Miss's Freeze has dnne a very good job and has shown that even a smaller budget school can hustle and recruit. Mullen? He has not shown so far that he can take MSU to a position of west contender. Franklin at Vandy is a winner in my book when you see the constraits that Vandy has in trying to recruit and bring in top talent.
Pinkel? I don't where he got the players who were on the field Saturday...but they sure could play.

May have been unfair expectation.
There is no was you can tell me that we have more talent on out defense right now than 80% of teams.

Probably shouldn't do performance grading on teams you know nothing about.
Stoops was left with very little to work with and UK has competed better than last year by 100%. Are there wins to show for it? No, but that just speaks to the disarray Joker left the program in.

Solid list. I would probably have Butch Jones higher. He took over a team with lower tier SEC talent. The only thing they learned under Dooley was proper shower techniques. Jones will have UT back to being a top team in the East.

Part of Miles' issue stems directly from the expectations here on TD. The offensive explosiveness shown early in the season was thought to be all they lacked, and all anyone heard was how amazingly incredible the offense was. The defense was a work in progress, and holding Florida to 6 as well as MSU's second half were considered the turning point. Anyone pointing out the fact that MSU has fallen in the second half a lot, and that UF's offense was the worst in the league, was deemed a "hater". Now that Ole Miss has exposed the defense, and we all see what happens when one dimensional teams have an "off" day with their one dimension, LSU has realized that the comments aren't those of "haters", but simply facts.

what's really different between these two guys this year? The conference hate for Miles is strong.
