Pretty sure we would have played JaMarcus if he would have stayed in state. I can't remember if we made a full court press on him or not since I know Brodie was the next Joe Namath.

We had a running joke all through the 2001 season that the announcers would label Zow the athletic QB and Watts the natural thrower. It happened just about every game that was on TV where both saw playing time.

Yep, I remember reading a pregame writeup from either a Big 10 or Big 12 team's student newspaper that stated exactly that. yet we're the racists...lol

Blake isn't in the future because of his race, its because he isn't a QB. If Jeremy Johnson had came to Bama for instance he would be a better fit. Sims is just an athlete.

Mostly a combination of (1) historically there were far fewer black QB HS recruits than white(this has changed now), (2) the kind of offense Alabama traditionally has run and runs now, and (3) plain old coincidence (this is probably the biggest factor frankly).

Saban and most coaches would play an alien if they were the best choice. They certainly aren't going to not play a black QB if they can get them and they give them the best chance to win.

Good answer. Thanks for actually responding to my post!

I'm sensing a lot of knee-jerk defensiveness here for some reason...

We gets pretty tired of being called racist after awhile.

Yep. Can't say Saban didn't try.

UT has had a pretty long line of successful black QBs but we also started the first black QB in the SEC: Condredge Holloway. We also had Jimmy Streater (forced to go to the CFL like Holloway), Tony Robinson (injury), Sterling Henton (CFL), Jerry Colquitt (injury -- we begged the NCAA to give him another year of eligibility as he'd waited his turn only to get injured but we were denied. He eventually played in the NFL Europe), Tee Martin (won a BCS Championship for us), and Brent Schaeffer (became the first true freshman QB to start in a season opener since the NCAA allowed freshmen to play - he got into a dorm fight, bounced around, and eventually transferred to Ole Miss. What a waste too as he'd have been among the greats.) And now true freshman QB Josh Dobbs.

It wasn't until fairly recently that the NFL would draft a black QB very high (if at all) or give black QBs much chance of starting and so those who wanted to play QB went to the CFL where they made a lot more money. Many others chose to change positions so they could make bank in the NFL.

There is definitely a racist component as to why black QBs are fewer in number. Both white and black folks hold stereotypes about black players being good at this and white players being good at that. Those stereotypes slot players into positions early in life determining the skills a player develops/practices, effect recruiting, and impact the willingness of a coach or NFL team to see past color/ideal type and make a decision based on the individual. The more conscious racism is dwindling but the subconscious racism and bias we hold based upon how someone looks still shows up.
